I‘m using this and comparing it to the new iPhones at the store (13 to 15 Pro), the only noticeably new thing is 120Hz. Everything else feels very similar, way closer than the iPhone SE I had before. SE is still a great phone, just different. I guess that is why Apple still sells it like that, because it can be noticed that the more expensive models are different. Sure the new phones are probably a bit faster, will probably get longer software support and will probably have longer battery life, but that is what I‘d expect from newer generations of technology. The ultrawide camera could be handy in some select situations, but that has been there since iPhone 11 as well (just one generation later). And the same is probably true for macro but that is very specific, and the 2x camera does a good job at that as well. Overall, coming from SE 2 to XS, I didn’t expect such a big difference. At the same time, I didn’t expect such a small difference between XS and later models. Weakest link, as always, is battery life but if one is not addicted to their phone it is manageable. 4GB RAM is great, so are the 256/512GB storage options and the wide sound speakers. One advantage this has over the newer ones is the design, I much prefer the shininess and the roundedness over the new models, which look boring and will not feel as good in the hand. I was worried about the weight but got used to it, though lighter would still make it even better (but then battery life suffers again). 3D Touch is a bit nice to have again as well even if not a necessity. In some ways this feels like the pinnacle of iPhone, and I‘m happy that I‘m spending some time with it before I will inevitably (have to) upgrade to a newer model.

I discarded 12 mini bc of the battery and the 13 mini is 2x more expensive than XS (same for 11 pro)
Plus, im not so sure about the flat edges on those

I've also looked on android but so far only the S10e caught my attention

That means is 1 year usage phone. Maximum 2 if you don't care about IOS updates, because Apple will release some security updates for this models 1 year after they stop IOS updates.
But from what I remember iPhone Xs is bad phone in battery. I had one for short time, and it had 94-95% battery health. Still, I charge it twice a day with moderate usage. And that is bad considering it is charging in about 90 minutes. Also, it got quite hot in video calling (FaceTime or WhatsApp), maybe because of the small size.
I will not recommend this phone in 2024, unless you absolutely want the cheapest iPhone with oled display that still has updated software. Even something like iPhone 11 is better than this phone because it will be 2-3 years usage phone. And is almost similar priced in second hand markets. Of course is not oled, but has better chipset, better cameras and better battery.
