Nokia N86 8MP gets better video recording via firmware update, stars in night photo campaign

07 August, 2009
Nokia have just released a new firmware update of it's cameraphone flagship, the Nokia N86 8MP. As before, Nokia keep on being laconic on what's new but we got a hold...

Optic, 08 Aug 2009 "Why's nokia trying so hard to show people 8MP 3rd Gen LE... moreDuh.... Shooting outdoors doesn't need Xenon, only indoors or close up pictures need light.....
AHAHAHAH!!!! Well imagine this if n86 is equipped with Xenon, well that would be great, almost like a digicam... heck we don't need megapixels on a phone, but better image quality (same for digital cameras)
I've been owning this K800i for like a year, the success of this phone was because of the Xenon Flash, same for the N82....
It's just mediocrity to put only LED on their top of a line "camera" phone...
    I understand it's just a phone,but isn't it a "camera"-phone?

Nokia will use xenon again, and when they combine it with this camera, it will blow away the likes of the i8910.

Exactly right Optic, Nokia are not trying to replace Xenon, they are merely giving a good argument as to how LED's can peform in a Cameraphone better nowadays. The obvious narrow minded responses of "Boo hoo, Nokia are finished without Xenon" are preposterous. Comparing it to the iphone is also stupid, as it can't even begin to take photos on a par with this.

"Why's nokia trying so hard to show people 8MP 3rd Gen LED and variable aperature is almost as good as Xenon"

The main reasons probably cause most people go with the hype like the MP race, hardly any one needs anything above 8 or even 5

and yea Xenon is used in Proper Digital camera's but this is a cell phone, nokia's been saying from day one that putting a LED is much easier than Xenon, cheaper, less energy required, less space needed.

We can't really doubt nokia's ability to use Xenon as the N82 is living proof.

If you look at the N86 pics than your see that it does take great pics at night, almost as good as Xenon.. so if nokia can achive those kind of results with LED than its pretty much a done deal for LED's and the added benefit of video light and a flash light

Thats why nokia is pushing the whole 3rd Gen LED thing to make people see for themselves.

Good phone overall. But the scratchless screen comes at a price, the phone fell out of my hand twice and ended up having a big crack on the screen. :(

Its a history of sought that nokia are trying too hard. This has shattered nokia brand image. Why dont nokia gracefully quit and come up with The BEST. Cant they see what the competitors have that beats n86 in terms of camera. Listen to markets demand rather than CEOs.

the Dslr is the only answer for night shots,if only cellphones had shutter controls and aperture setting.

i can't belive that this phone has it so hard just because it doesn't have a xenon flash. it looks like nokia put allot of efort in making a good camera phone, and i think they did it. the specs aren't that impresive (8MP insted of 12, and LED insted of xenon) but all that mathers is the quality and what it can do. i had the n82 and n95 and at only 5mp both made great pictures

the same think hapened with the iphone 3gs... it had "only" 3MP, but the pictures are great. so high resolution doest't necesaraly mean a beter quality. at 8MP (even 5MP or 3MP) the resolution is great, you just need good lens and sensor.

this phone will never replace the n95 because the buttons an speakers on the n86 are not up to scratch,an the screen is sunlight blurred, nokias got to really sort themselves out or they will be trailing samsung an sony ericsson in the coming months, they took that long to join the 8 mega-pixel camera market an the same soon with the 12 ones on there way, they got it going with the n95 but since the n95 8gb one not shown to the others they will not be beaten, why the cheap version idea of the n85 body with camera upgrade, why couldn"t we something better from nokia, they"ve lost momentum nowdays nokia an people can"t believe why?
