Anonymous, 24 Aug 2009ahh... the iphone profit... somewhere on the interet i r... moreTrue we would not exactly know how much profit iPhones are making but the correlation between where Apple made substantial increases in profits is during the period of the iPhones. Other Apple products has not really changed that much

High end is where most profits are made. AllAboutSymbian constantly states this... Well according to some research iPhones 2G cost less than $100 to make but they sell for over $500 (including subsidies) at the time.

You would have to sell quite a lot of low end phones just to make this figure. Developing markets such as Africa and some parts of Asia will always buy shiploads of these phones but the future is changing so rapidly and if you sell these high end phones to them instead, your profits will rocket. Did you know the high end smartphone market share increased by nearly a third this year?

The size really doesn't determine it's a MID. Remember when phones use to be big and weigh a ton. Nokia communicators were smartphones...

somewhere on the interet i read:
if only apple will seperate the profit of selling the iphone, ipod, notebook, etc, we will see that iphone profit is not as high as other thought....

the profit for selling phone is in the low and high end... not mid end.

If you will read the article at mobile-review, you will know that high-ends does not give the company so much profits. And about Iphone, they have the Itunes and other soure of profits. That's how I understand it.

Anonymous, 23 Aug 2009Yes I do agree with your points and over at mobile-review ... moreI don't think nokia will banish S40. S40 were very easy to use, and very suitable for low-end device. Maybe in the future the sub US$20-US$100 will use the S40.

Whereas the cost for producing the S30 device is not significantly cheaper than S40, so the S30 should be gone. Note: the OS footprint of S40 is only a couple of MB. And OS footprint of S30 only a couple hundreds of kilobyte. With current price to store the OS and CPU to run these platform, it's only around US$1 different.

Anonymous, 23 Aug 2009Please STOP spouting things that are untrue. Please read th... moreWhile we all wanna believe that N900 goes into the phone category. The actual product category will fall into MID.

Actually, there were no fine rule that is this a phone or MID. but from the ability that N900 have and size, it will FIGHT with others MID.

Some of you who wanna buy phone and consider N900. But some other (mostly) that wanna buy MID will think of N900.

              anyway...
do you know that N800 & N810 fall into MID category?
They have the same form factor and weight as N900.
I would say that Nokia N800 & N810 is looks better than N900.

                  SAG, 24 Aug 2009What is the difference between N97 and N9000?Firstly, it is N900, not 9000 :D
                  N97 has ARM 11 434MHz processor, N900 has ARM-Cortex A8 600MHz (if not higher clock speed).
N97 has 128MB RAM, N900 has 1GB Virtual runtime memory with 256MB RAM.
                  N97 runs Symbian S60 5th edition OS, N900 runs Linux-based Fremantle (Maemo5) OS.
N900's screen is more responsive than N97's one, and according to the reviewer its touch experience is almost the same as the iPhone.
N900 is relatively smaller in size than N97.
N900 has got a kickstand, which is missing at N97.

These are the leaked specs, the rest are kept in secret, as the reviewer didn't want to say them, waiting for NOKIA's official announcement, which should be in their conference 2nd September.

If you see how nokia con... moreYes I do agree with your points and over at mobile-review who seems to get their hands on the latest devices before anyone else says S60 will become their low to mid-tier offering. s30 and s40 will eventually be phased out, while Maemo will used in their high end devices - convergence. This is the future where smartphones meets computer. The high end is where most profits are made. The market for high end smartphones is also growing at a rapid rate. Nokia's knows this... Nokia will not have to sell a gazillion phones (low to mid tier) to make profits. Just look at the iPhone and see the huge profits they’re making yet they only have about 2-3% market share of the whole mobile phone market (dumb, feature, and smart phones).

Symbian Foundation is at least a couple years away from being matured and ready for primetime. It’s unclear where SF will lie in Nokia’s strategic plans but my guess it will take over S60 for low to mid-tier phones while Linux/Maemo will remain for their high end convergence devices.

UMPC = 600 gram (0.6 kg) device size as sony vaio p lifestyle or Fujitsu U820.

Based on the size of the battery and the Simcard, this unit seem to be really small. somewhere in the size region of 110x58x15mm (according to my measurement). and if that hold true, the screen will be about 4"... which will make this the smallest 4" package out there. even incl. qwerty keyboard and all the other goodies.

If this size holds true, this will put nokia back on top of the game. and this will bridge the gab between mobiles smartphone and MID just nicely.
