Anonymous, 22 Aug 2009WTF...
Intel may play a part in Nokia's future devices b... moreThat's right
Intel might be able to rule the computer world, but the cellular world is different. Here the device is measure in GRAM. The battery need to be small, so the device would be able to be put on our pocket without tearing down the pocket.
Intel atom processor is not power efficient. Arm have an advantage of a power efficient processor. For the same computing power, Arm architecture draw less power... lot's of less power than intel x86 architecture (read: atom).
x86 architecture is too complex & too complicated for this market..

Anonymous, 22 Aug 2009This is Nokia's secret weapon/platform that will bring Noki... moreThis would be a very bad moves.
If you see how nokia concurs the cellular market, you know that there is no one OS to rule them all. Nokia is very smart to have S30, S40, S60 and Maemo, and use these OS at different market level.
First, I think nokia should dumb the S30, because I hate the S30 device. The memory footprint of S30 might be lots smaller than S40, but S30 only left-right navigation button really hard to navigate.
Second, if nokia will dumb SF(S60), then nokia will have a hole in their portfolio. Nokia need to move the S60 to the middle-upper range. Just like they did now. S60 on the Express Music/E-series/N-series. And only put Maemo on their top of the phone. Why? Because Maemo need more processor & memory & space. Maemo OS is way bigger than S60. Thus making it need more space to store the OS, need more memory to execute the OS, and making it need more processor power to run the OS.
Nokia already did great with their strategy. If not, nokia will be the next erricson, or the next Siemens, or the next Motorola. We should admit that nokia will stay on top for another 5-10 years due to a great strategy.

WTF...
Intel may play a part in Nokia's future devices but not at the moment. Their Atom processors are no way near as efficient as ARM current crops of CPU which uses less than 1 watt. The Atom still uses several times more than this and is quite inefficient. There is really no comparison to smartphone CPU's... Arm Cortex A8 @ 600Mhz is very close to performance of the Atom but uses far less energy. It can handle Full HD which can't be said for Atom.
Intel needs far less power hungry and more efficient CPU's before they can be put into smartphone.

This is Nokia's secret weapon/platform that will bring Nokia back to the top.
I can't wait to get my paws on this thing. I've owned their previous tablets and it was awesome. The web browser is so close to your desktop. Most phone browsers including iPodPhone are no match.
You could end up running Ubuntu, PCLinusOS or any distro on this thing.
I think if this becomes a huge success Nokia may forget about Symbian Foundation and stick with Linux for all their phones... I think this will be a great idea.

Anonymous, 22 Aug 2009Real mobile computer with phone capability
Just not fa... moreMaemo is just another distro of Linux. Like Suse/novel/ubuntu/redhat/slackware/etc.
You can compile any linux app for Maemo. or someone will compile it for Maemo user and put it in repository for you to download easily.
if your not familiar with linux, one linux app build for other platform might just need to be re-complied to be able to run in other platform.
so, basically, all linux apps were able to run on this maemo... skype, open office, linux game...
and...
since nokia have bought QT Trooltech and make an abstraction layer for their S60 OS, the linux apps could be easily be ported on your symbian phone too.

If you see that market N900 trying to capture... in the competitor area Sony P Lifesyle is the most sexy device. Fujitsu U800/U810/U820 is not bad either, and there were also several other UMPC device with GSM/3G.
Most of that device is using a Windows, and some intel CPU. That competitor might be more powerfull than N900, but N900 will have the advantage of better stanby power/usage power OVER weight. It will be the lightest of them all, with longer standby power.
But... as I said... sony P Lifesytle is the sexiest of them all. It so thin, and the screen is so good. Unfortunately it caries US$800 price tag, and the stanby time is too short.
Anyway...
I really waiting for that N900 to enter the real world. I really expect it's not too late for nokia to play in this market. Good device

Guys,
The Nokia N900 a.k.a RX-511 is NOT a phone.
It's a Netbook/Notebook/UMPC/nano-computer WITH a GSM sim card.
It's the same as Sony Vaio P-Lifestyle
Or Fujitsu U800/U810/U820
Or Kojinsa
Or Asus EEE (the original one / the cheap one)
It's a underpower computer with a SIM card.
It seems that as Nokia big bos said.. that at the thin-and-light platform the umpc platform... the computer and handphone is emerge, just like when PDA and phone emerge creating a smartphone category, now the computer and handphone emerge creating the new category... super-smart phone.
so..
this N900 won't be everyone phone. but this is will be a tablet computer just like in star trek.... i really hope it does have a klingon language.
