I've provided a copy of the certificate, now you can post as many opinions as you want but that does not alter the FACT that on May 18 2007, OSX, made by Apple was certified as UNIX, therefore OSX IS UNIX.

Anonymous, 29 Aug 2009You present me with a difficult choice, who to believe...
... moreMacOS is NOT a Unix. It is based on Next Step, in which based on Mach kernel.
Now, the keyword here is the Mach Kernel. Mach Kernel were developed by Carnegie Mellon as a REPLACEMENT for BSD Unix.
The keyword here is REPLACEMENT.
Basically what Carnegie did were they make a CLONE of Unix kernel. The clone doesn't necessarily as good as unix or as bad as unix and it doesn't need to do the way that unix kernel did. What they did were replacing some call. i.e. if the layer above the kernel ask for "abc", then they see what the BSD unix would return for "abc" and they clone it. and so on and so on. They didn't need to do it the same as BSD unix did, because the most important thing is the value/function they return when the call was made to the kernel.
As the certification they got, it just said that MacOS X kernel were certified meaning that were equal (could be replacing) some unix flavor kernel.
This is just like what a FreeDOS is. Basically a FreeDOS is a DOS-like-OS build on a linux based (derivative of linux source code, they use the linux source code and modified it) but reply everything the MS-DOS way. It doesn't have a code from microsoft at all. and it build on different technology as the DOS from microsoft, but it could be used as replacement to DOS.
The free Dos have the usual "C>" C-prompt, and we could use DIR instead of LS. So, is it DOS (the same as DOS with microsoft) .... no. it's a DOS-like-OS. It did the command differently with DOS, but it have the DOS UI/call.

Here is a link to the certificate which was granted on 18th May 2007 running through to 18th May 2010.
