25 August, 2009
Nokia are obviously getting really serious about their touchscreen portfolio. Hot on the heels of the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic, they have announced the Nokia 5230 - an entry-level touchscreen handset...

Like it or not this cheap nokia will sell in million and will dent iphone profit.

In some country that post paid is the king
some kid "Dady, can I have iphone, it's only US$99.99"
parent "yeah, but the monthly fee is so expensive."
kid "most of friend have those good looking iphone"
dad "why don't you search the internet and look for Nokia 5230, it's $190, and you can use the affordable plan".
kid "You're the greatest dad ever, my friend will feel ashame that their phone make their parents wallet dry every month"

In some other part of the world where pre-paid is the king
kid "mom, can I have the $999 iphone 3GS, or the $799 iphone 3G"
mom "You could buy a computer or motorcycle with that kind of money"
kid "but it's so cool, I saw on a tv, you can just touch it"
mom "I just see an add in news paper about nokia 5230, let's go to nokia showroom"
kid "wow, it come in my favourite color, thanks mom, and we still have money to buy some nokia booklet too"

Anonymous, 26 Aug 2009Yet iphone lacks basic multimedia feautures being integrate... moreSeems like some almighty brand supporters would like others to believe "hard specs" are the most important things ever....

30% of the time I couldn't hear what my friend who uses 5800 says, 80~90% of the time I can hear what my wife says thru her iphone. I never say "speak louder / repeat what you say please" on my friend's Moto U9 with Crystal Talk.

So really depends on what people want....some people can't live without the phone's camera, even though they take most of their pics thru their DC's, some value voice clarity (like myself), some like the slim style of iphone...which still can't be match by any of the almighty brand's recent touchscreen offerings. All of the above are subjective preferences which noone should force others to accept their preferences...and calling others "?sheep" is also not appropriate.

Forget specs it is just better and has awsome sunlight legibility. It is also far more powerful than any Nokia on the market, camera modules are not themost important thing in a phone. Now comparing this to an iPhone is chalk and cheese, an N97 on the other hand maybe. But this phone I think is well priced and will sell well as it offers ok specs, decent colours at a reasonably entry level price.

iphone comes with one of the best user friendly interface...requires the least steps to install any software, hangs the least (especially compare to Symbian), slim, stylish, (for the ladies, when they carry an iphone, others can easily tell they've an iphone, if they carry an 5230, most others don't care if it's 5800 or another unit from HTC or Samsung or whatever...)

The value of the "features" mentioned above are rather subjective. I do know most iphone users are still quite happy with their 1~2 years old unit, while many have complained so much about N95/N97/5800 and sold their units already.

(owned the N95 8gb, 1 of the best i have used).

The reason Nokia make phones like this is so when they sell a hundred million of them they can say, look Nokia has 45% the smartphone market with Symbian, all these noobs will come along and think it's phones like the N97 or E series Nokia are talking about.

The thing that shows this is the amount of money Nokia makes.

                          High volume, low margin handsets.

nokia doesn't take touchscreens seriously, and until they start offering some capacitive screen phones they are a huge disappointment in my eyes.

                                Darn it... why remove Wifi?

It's an entry level phone so Nokia wants a piece of the low-end touchscreen phone market by introducing a stripped down model.

No wifi means FORCING people to buy a data plan! Good idea... NOT!

Guess this is a teaser for Nokia products. If you like, then buy MORE expensive Nokia touchscreen phones in future. BAD idea!

Crappy software and features for the public!

OMY... Nokia sounds like Sony Ericsson!

It's time that Nokia's financial performance takes a hit like SE's!!

Well, 3G isn't that big over here and I don't care about GPS. So I prefer the 5530. If I could make things as I wanted, I would had a Samsung Star with WiFi.

I love the Samsung Star's design, but it lacks WiFi to be totally amazing.

This is one more attempt to take a dig into increasing market share by putting in an existing tooling with less costs and targeting it at mass. I would love to see something better though.
