Let's hope Google's Project Ara will succeed. Then it be the best choice.
I want modular phones. (Phones with user replaceable parts.)
If I built my own phone, would get
-a 720p IPS screen,
-the best SoC,
-the best camera,
-and the biggest battery.

We need innovation not just better specs each year. Agree with someone who said thermal vision camera or night should be step forward. Planty of things can be done for example why not bring tv back on phones or walkie talkie how cool that be

You can't think objectively. You don't mention that despite S4 has lower screen resolution, it has older, less efficient CPU/GPU.
But compare G3 to G2. They have similar specs, except the resolution. G2 has better battery life than G3, because G2 has lower resolution.

Lg G3 is a very good fone with gud battery. I am sure G4 gona be excelent device. They only need to improve contrast level . 16 mpx is gud. 3K display wil be amazing on 5.5".
