Leaked Windows Mobile 7 design mockups bring the OS up to speed

21 October, 2009
Now that it's finally out, Windows Mobile 6.5 seems to be getting some less than stellar reviews - ours included - so here's a well-timed leak of some new WinMo 7 design mockups. These Before and After...

First, remember that all the fuzz about WinMo revolves around how heavy and tiring and complicated it is to lift the stylus out of your pocket and unto the phone. Or, that it looks stale or that you are not able to shuffle icons (visual gunk) from left to right all day long, etc.

Very little is said about the fact that it is the only real portable phone OS not a cell phone interface, that things can actually be accomplished with productivity apps that come with it. For example, I am able to open my Word email attachements and use many third part apps to view PDF docs, etc. I am able to sync and survey a spreadsheet away from my desktop, etc. It is harder to use because it is an operating system with more features and demands more from the hardware. It is funny to hear some people demand that it innovates when some of its ancient features are just starting to appear in other interfaces. WinMo will never satisfy those who primary joy is the tossing about of eye candy on their phone and it will never be perfect, but people who are eager to accomplish things or use the cell phone as a work tool will find uses for it. There is more than just pics, MP3's, and contacts to using a work phone.

It seems they are using design of S60 5th Ed phones with exclusion of 'Start' button.

Winmo isnt for dumb teenagers with tiny brains, who wants nothing but multimedia options..its for people who needs to work on a pc all the time mainly office work...so if you need a phone with good multimedia stuff get somthing else like a samsung pixon 12 or nokia n97

windows mobile was always slow enough. with these new design will be much more slower. so... new PPCs requires more powerful processors... or will be useless, simple to slow.

I'm sure Microsoft will make it compulsory to include a "Windows" button for every device. Else there's no other way to go to the "Start" or at least a home button.

If this is what Microsoft thinks will save their mobile OS they are screwed. All it is is just a reskinned version of 6. People want super simple OS with lots of fuction. Look at the rest, blackberry, android, iphone, webos. They are all simple and very functional. Come one Microsoft give us something new.

I think people think that this looks like Win 6.5 is because they're not looking at the pictures carefully.. Each picture shows the difference between win 6.5 and 7... Top pic is 6.5 and Bottom pic is 7...

For those who think WinMo is boring and dull.. WinMo is making the OS simple in graphics for us to install plugins and graphical interfaces which suits ours preferences.. Apple, Android and Symbian would dream for such idea...

                    WinMo forever....

These are mockups of Windows Mobile 7? Nah... looks more like WM 6.5.1 mockups to me. Some of the screen elements shown in the screenshots already exist in the beta builds there....

well then... winmo has always been so boring. thank god for HTC touch flo 3d and other widgets that could at least help the look and efficiencies.the last time i used a winmo was on 2004 and after that i would not have any intention to use the winmo OS on my smartphone (EVER!) how hard for microsoft to create an attractive and simple OS????????????????????? and yet with all the standard looks and attractiveness winmo still manage to lag most of the time even with the fastest processor.

I really dont understand what do you people want.....a 3d hand that will come out of your fone's screen and slap you to wake up???

i think this is great. the old school icons and small menus are gone. and thats the only thing required to make the OS great and compete with others........because third party will handle the rest. not like what is happening today that even htc manila for example has nice facelift but behind is still the old os. this time, its different. so this will make windows the best again. all rounder.

I'm not biased to any one OS (I own iPhone and Xperia X1) and been using WM for a long time now (since the days when you loose everything if the phone runs out of power, not kidding)

And I was very much expecting the WM7, but seeing these pics, I'm wondering how is this any diff from the TF3D interface we have today (from HTC). My gut feel is that by the time 7 comes out, the UI changes wouldn't be relevant.

The only thing WM phone should do is go finger-only route. So now I'm waiting for the HD2 rather than a better OS.

Microsoft has been in mobile business since 2000,yet they still released something this non user friendly interface?i've used win-mo before and it's not very practical, not even a single phone with great multimedia capabilities regardless they were launched in many company(except Nokia who used to be loyal to symbian).
Personally i won't use Win-mo based smartphones anymore, not after i used Mac.Os and the curiosity behind android which look a lot better than win-mo.

[deleted post]I am not WinMo lover but I am really sick of seeing iPhone or MacOS for Mobiles as something out of this world. Well it is not. A system that drive one thing at a time should never compared to some system that can drive countless things at same time. It is just not fair to compare iPhone to any of the smartphones out there.

Just because you iPhone lovers like it doesn't make other systems outdated, not at this stage where iPhone is standing right now.
