Nokia suing Apple over the infringment of a dozen of patents

22 October, 2009
Nokia have obviously had some grudges with Apple ever since the iPhone was introduced in 2007 and now they're even going to court. The reason - well, Apple have used some of Nokia's GSM, UMTS and...

im really dissapointed of Nokia, im aware of their difficult situation and their loss in smartphone market, but this is not the way to deal with the rivals specially the most popular one i do not like the iPhone but is now a status symbol and this is not good for Nokia, they'll look like Microsoft control the market but nobody likes them.

If Nokia wanted they could create a better phone, but it seems like they give a s**t about it just minor updates to the next model, same design.

Anyway i just hope this does not damage both brands

Nokia says that all iphones use its patented technologies. iphones have been around for a few years now. then why didn't nokia sue apple from the very beginning? this lawsuit would've never happen if iphones didn't take a big chuck out of nokia's smartphone marketshare.
So, what's next nokia? here's an idea: start working on lawsuit against RIM on whatever, you'll come up with something

        Simple fact:

Nokia was already a big boy with full grown co.. for creating the iCopycat baby with Apple when iCopycat was not even concepted in its Apple chamber. Anyone at least ONCE in a lifetime bought a Nokia: one of those Ericsson killer Axxx series in the late '90. End of the story! iCopycat grew up and guess what, like a young clueless teenage it turned against its own BIG daddy Nokia for taking care of his baby all these years long

Nokia keep their weary sight on apple, jealousy is so thick in the air,and while they look at apple above them also wondering why with their outdated mobiles that feel and look so 2000--This Is 2009--and repeatedly asking question "What's wrong with our phone?" somewhere down below Samsung & LG will get their position as number one, throwing the nok.down and that means good bye nokia and welcome to your new position as SE & Motorola neighbor.
As for iPhone..they are still on top of the hill, since their "iPhone Killer"is still somewhere in other people's imagination, still far for a dream come true.

Apple is paying an estimated $50 in licensing fees per phone for the technologies it uses. I wonder how much more it would be if Nokia's fees were added to that.

Anonymous, 23 Oct 2009A920 came before A925... 3G, back in those days, were just... more"A920 came before A925...
3G, back in those days, were just an expensive technology, not used by many carriers... sucking batteries like nothing else.
Sure, Motorola introduced a 3G touchphone before nokia.
If youre that specific, SE introduced a colour, touchscreen smartphone, before motorola did.
The question is not who was first with a phone to meet specific details.
Nokia have had touchphones in their portfolio. Back when motorola produced A920/A925/A1000, SE had P800/P900/P910, nokia had 7700/7710."

So when Moto was making "3G" A920/925/1000, were the P-series you mentioned also running on 3G? If you only compared "color touchscreen" phones, why you didn't mention Moto A388C, which was released in Q2 2003?

As much as the almighty brand was being no1 where I live when 7700/7710 were released, I haven't not seen a single person used such "BRICKS" all these years....as these phones weren't even release where I live.

"Im not saying that Nokia is Almighty, I did not produce that comment, just replyied yours, since it seemed you didnt know that Nokia made touchphones before."

But the fact is, if the almighty brand is suing Apple for use of GSM technology, why others can't sue the almighty brand for making "3G" touchscreen phones?

If you know any make / model released a "3G" touchscreen phone before A920/925, kindly let me know.

"I dont think there is any almighty company out there.
Nokia is too big for the best of the industry, but that does not make them almigty... just very powefull... especially when it comes to slowing evolution down in mobile industry... but they've made some tries. Tochscreen phones, they were there, but then left the race... probably not for the best of evolution in mobile industry."

Best of the industry? If so, why can't it offer technology like Crystal Talk, which makes a phone really a phone? Why the almighty brand was among the LAST to offer video call on its 3G phones? Why its phones right now using micro-USB cannot "charge" by USB? Tech leader in these (simple) areas?

"Nokia made a smartphone OS, motorola did not."

My understanding is the almighty brand invented the so called "smart" O/S which drew many complaints for its instability, such as auto shutdown / restart.

"So you think motorola phones were the first product ever to feature charging thru micro-usb... well im sure you are refering to mini-usb... but still, I doubt they were fist... In mobiles, they probably were, but to own a patent bacause they were the first to produce such a thing require them to be first on all kind of product, not only mobile phones."

So who is the first to make use of MICRO USB before V8/V9? If you're talking about mini-USB, wasn't Moto also being the first when it released E680/V3?

Back to the topic, if the almighty brand is suing Apple for using GSM, then why can't Moto sue the almighty brand for using 3G touchscreen, micro-USB, etc...?

I dont paticully favor either company here, but this is just sour grapes on Nokia's part and a marketing ploy to raise Nokia's profile.

Nokia also pays these companies when they are using their technologies (mainly Samsung, SE and Motorola). Apple has very little to offer others which means it has to pay in full without the chance of cross-licencing its own technology to others. If Apple would make a CDMA phone it would have to pay mainly Qualcomm for the use of those patents beause Qualcomm is the biggest patentholder in that technology. Actually they would have to pay Qualcomm much more than they now will have to pay Nokia for each handset they make using Nokia's patents. Patents are important to ensure enough R&D is made, otherwise it wouldbe pointless to spend money developing new things if it would be free to steal it."
