Is Nokia really dropping Symbian as the OS of choice for N-series?

Nokia, you must use and develop both OS - new Maemo & Symbian! Nokia, SE are the best, thanks to Symbian. Just need more develop Symbian OS to users needs and Nokia future it's bright. All Samsung, LG it's crap, useless phones. Good luck Symbian!

Nokia now does not like the others using the same software they use on other mobiles, that why the Symbian software will be slowly be removed from Nokias top end mobiles, but they might regret the decision if the Maemo software does not make there mobiles so unique,o.k symbian does have its blips but its been so easy an simple to use,so hope the new software follows suit

wait till the s60 matures and will see what's next. . . the problem basically with s60 is that it doesn't have a lot of changes compared with their non touch counter part, just few cosmetic changes here & there. . put a touch screen functionality. . . while the maemo acts more like a pocket PC,more of the multi tasking, rather than mono tasking is present in maemo. . but I think what I like about the s60 is that it has a lot of softwares (mainly because s60 is one of the most used UI in the mobile realm)
but we might not know, maybe s60 just found it's match. . . or maybe later s60 might pull something out from it's sleeves,or maybe Maemo might just beat the s60 simply as stealing candy from a baby.Who knows??
From the guy who used the s40,s60 3.2,s60 5th edition,symbian UIQ 3.0,windows mobile 6.5. . .
The Cyber-Shot under dog is back!!!

Sounds great to me. Nokia were being criticized about symbian on high-end devices, but now Maemo will do the trick for Nokia.
Sounds A strategy that nokia has kept symbian os for mid-range and low-end devices and Maemo for high-end.
Let's hope for the best
Symbian is still the pioneer in all phones except touchscreen ones.

Perhaps this might be a good move for Nokia because Symbian is not 'great' anymore on some Nokia's released lately (Namely the 5800XM and N97). We shall see if the N900 will prove that the Maemo OS is good enough to take over Symbian.

Anonymous, 19 Nov 2009yea i've got the Omina and it is over rated, winmo 6.1 was ... moreThey are just changing the view of the phones lol look what htc have been relying on all this timd WinMo and it's been failing .speed doesn't matter if the Os is garbage and laggy
All nokia needs to go is put more RAM in the smartphone and increase the clock speed
And s60 5th is fine it has it's issues but updates will and can fix
I've been using my 5800 for 4 almost 5 months and it's fine
And i have v31.2 on running

symbian isn't worst but their developers are worst.... comparing winmo symbian is lot better & it can fire up 256mb RAM for future devices with powerfull processor which we seen in SE satio....

Currently here in my country Malaysia, the 5800 XM are now a EUR198.00 or USD296.00 "what I consider to be proper starter Symbian phone" officially.Thing is that this particular model scorched the sales chart even at USD100.00 more at launch time a while back.Point is...despite any flaws the 5800 has and although fans had to wait until the latest firmware revision to be at ease with the somewhat clunky resistive action the 5800's known for, they appreciate the fact that for a Symbian phone they didn't have to fork out N-series prices to put it bluntly. Now that Nokia got N900 as the loudest battle cry, bystanders aren't that dumb anymore and harsher critics would bay for blood if they're seeing an ARM Cortex A8 + PowerVR SGX combo priced at iPhone's ridiculous levels for this last quarter of the year.In this case in my country,it's gonna be even more expensive than the Jesus phone definitely.Hardly a surprise knowing how Nokia plies the N trade.People here don't mind Samsung's prices because they know what Samsung brings to the table in each and every newer launches hardware-wise.I can rant some more but don't know if any Nokia lurkers here can get the point.

Deep space bar, 19 Nov 2009Dude WinMo chugs like at slow train and lags like dial up I... moreyea i've got the Omina and it is over rated, winmo 6.1 was total flop and 6.5 isn't all that amazing,
but The Touch HD2 is changing things, that speed is insanely fast for a smartphone and the ui is far better than Symbian
but at least its a improvement unlike what nokia are doing, Maemo isn't all that amazing either but it looks like nokia is relying heavily on it\

Anonymous, 19 Nov 2009Maemo is ugly, just like symbian
these days its not abou... moreDude WinMo chugs like at slow train and lags like dial up Inet
I used the Omina and Omnina 2 which both have WinMo 6.1 and 6.5 and 256 with 40mb on start up is fail and the fact it only displays 65k colour is epic fail ....where are the improvments to WinMo expect the UI revamp

Maemo is ugly, just like symbian
these days its not about functionality anymore, apple changed the game, people just want something that looks good
HTC have done just that, a smartphone platform covered by a impressive set of animations is a good way to go
too bad the iphones just rubbish at everything except looking good
Nokia is dieing in real, its not a joke anymore they need to up their game much higher cause not only is winmo pushing further but android is working its way through

Well I saw this one coming. Now that Symbian purchase looks a little foolish.
