They probably would have said the same about Vaio. I am quite sure the rumors weren't unfounded but no one wanted to buy their mobile business, for good reasons, so to avoid admitting total failure they say they didn't wanna sell it anyway.
The problem remains, Sony don't wanna make phones people want and is keeping a steady heading towards bankruptcy. With the current lineup it's no doubt a harakiri, going down believing they have their dignity intact, so pathetic.

I can buy a low/mid range phone from anywhere. No point competing with the cheap stuff. Produce quality, innovative and stylish phones (like the Z's!) and they will sell.

Now that sounds credible: "...will never sell..." Do they even listen to themselves when they say stuff like this. Haven't they heard "Never say never"? Especially in business. I would have formulated it as: "Sony will not sell their mobile division at this point in time."

Sony should stop making entry-level phones just because the chinese manufactures are dominating it. Instead, focus on high-end phone (and maybe mid-range) because there is still room to compete in that market. Still it's a tremendous news to hear

Sony needs to release an updated Xperia ZR. Mines is still running great but its starting to show its age. Compact, removable battery, SD card and waterproof, its an amazing little phone.

Good job! Cut jobs, raise prices like all those CEOs do. But the only thing it'd lead to is failure. Hirai probably hasn't read research about job cuts in an R&D company - if you cut jobs your share prices fall, your performance worsens.

They should follow apples style, sell only the Z series, since its a good quality products. They could design the CPU like apple, since they already produce the camera modules. They SHOULD update the their android version to the latest in the quickest possible time

They should absolutely ditch everything but the premium Z series. They're not selling any low or mid-rangers, and there's no money there even if they were.
