    "Main Entry: mul·ti·task·ing
    Pronunciation: \-ˌtas-kiŋ\
    Function: noun
    Usage: often attributive
    Date: 1966
1 : the concurrent performance of several jobs by a computer
2 : the performance of multiple tasks at one time
    — mul·ti·task \-ˌtask\ intransitive verb
    — mul·ti·task·er \-ˌtas-kər\ noun"

Now why don't you back up the definition that you made up with a link to a definition.

Two or more tasks at once i.e. Safari, Mail, iTunes will all run at once on an iPhone.

Running a slideshow in the photo App while playing music with iTunes = multitasking.

There are no if's or but's the iPhone multitasks under the accepted definition of multitasking.

The iPhone CAN multitask, its got UNIX under the hood, the first true multitasking OS.
Its not allowed for 3rd party apps at the moment, but that doesnt mean its not possible. Backgrounder is really easy to install and will allow apps to run in the bacround:

And before you say "you need to get a third party app" or whatever, third party developers are the most innovative and come up with the best software.

to prove the non existing multitasking on iPhone.

But it seems you haven't read the article...

"The iPhone has the same virtual memory system, but doesn’t have gigabytes of RAM or a hard drive to use as a Virtual Memory swap space. Instead, it has 128MB of RAM, of which something like 11MB appears to be used for VRAM and 19MB looks to be used by system overhead, leaving around 76MB reported by sysctl as user memory.

By limiting the amount of background processes running, the iPhone’s OS X can offer more of that available RAM to the foreground application, along with a less distracted processor. "

Here's another link that you won't be so thankful about

It'll explain to you in detail that iPhone can't multi task and also why.

I say iPhone does not multi task and all what you are saying (i.e. I agreee with you)

My initial definition (@ 2009-12-10 09:35) was to counter a quoted definition from a dictionary by Anonymous (@ 2009-12-10 09:16) and which implied that iPhone cannot switch between the UI's of different applications cause it can't minimize the one that is open.

                          On record iPhone can't multitask.

so not in the english language, not in the smarphone definition, not in Steve Jobs definition... where in the world does the iPhone multitask? In the advanced technical world, where every phone multitasks as this is requiered for a mobile to work.
But it does not multitask on an application level.
                            You cant fool anyone.

The Bada OS multitasks, the iPhone OS, at least not at this point.

who is the jealous person here? the one that try in everyway to convince people that the iPhone can do something it cant, or the one buying other phones, cause the iPhone cant do it.
You have revealed the truth, you badly wish the iPhone could multitask, you see the purpose of it... but you try to convince yourself and other, that the few functions on the iPhone that can be done simultaniously on the iphone is all you need, and that that is the true definition of multitasking (but not according the the smartphone community, not according to steve jobs, and not accoridng to an english dictionary).
