4g became mainstream in UK around 2013-2014 so not bad at all, only took 5 years, now let's wait for 5g sometime in 2020-ies?

the grape vines have it that a certain network in South Africa will bless the continent with 4G...confirmed by the C.E.O
fat cats be on the look out, the little cat is coming up to compete on your level.
as a matter of fact, the network is already being put to the test in Cape Town...its only a matter of time until it is rolled out to the rest of the country

Bambang Satrio, 16 Dec 2009Wooww..whilst Indonesia is yet struggling for better 3G con... moreReality check - this 4G in norway is a tiny limited offer with 100 modems and almost no covereage.
Even 3G in Norway is pretty weak, especially the one offered by Netcom (the Telia operating company in Norway). Their coverage even in the capital city, Oslo, is awful and many places you are really on Edge.
Oh and its overpriced like crazy. TeliaSonera/Netcom and Telenor basically have a duopoly and rip off mobile customers.
Its worse even in broad band fixed lines where Telenor is a virtual monopoly and cripples speed and development. While folks in Sweden have 100mbit fiber optic lines I cant even get 8Mb out of my Telenor ADSL and I live in Oslo.
This is all just hype over a limited offer that is sure to be usuriuosly priced - if netcom cant even provide good 3G coverage what are the chances they will even have worthwhile 4G. They will just charge the gullible custoemrs for "4G" and they will many cases be struggling with not even 3G but EDGE:

Anonymous, 16 Dec 2009A 4G cellular system must have target peak data rates of up... moreSay what?
Lte is the technology called 4G, it comes at different speeds... in the future we will be able to reach high datatransfer rates, but as it is of today, we have to settle for lower rates... as this 4G network in stochholm, that is able to deliver more than 40 mbit/s today (perhaps not fully the 50 Mbit/s stated, but on a simple test a reporting magazine got 42 Mbit/s). It will be upgraded for up to 80 Mbit/s in the next step, than in the fure even faster.
Its still 4G, even if it cant handle 100Mbit/s.

Mathew (England), 16 Dec 2009Both hardware & software has a lot of catching up to do to ... moreWell, 4G at the moment is used for data, not calls, so we are not talking mobile phones here.
But sure, mobiles need better CPUs to be able to handle the speeds of 4G... and the software needs to be able to during calls, if you lose 4G coverage alter the voice bearing technology, as 4G uses another technology for transporting data.
The first 4G phones might not even make 4G calls, but just use it for the data connections. (we dont use 3.5G/3G+ for better sound quality when making calls).
4G is also better for handling several of connections (great when many people want to connect with mobile broadband all at the same time), than 3G+ and so on...
So there are many advantages of 4G...
But youre right when it comes to mobiles...But that is not the targeted audience today.

Anonymous, 16 Dec 2009Bad reporting, current HSDPA networks can get 21 mbps and w... moreup to 50mbit/s today, and up to 80 sometime next year.
50Mbit/s is more than 10 times 3G, but who really cares now that we have 3G+ (that today can delver up to 21Mbit/s second, but will be upgraded in the future... I guess you read the wrong numbers)

Peter, 15 Dec 2009This is a PR-stunt from Telia that has apparently worked it... moreAbout the modems, there are two sides to the story... Samsung say that they have delivered 1000, telia sonera say that they dont have the modems...
Samsung say that they will deliver any now and then but cant tell any dates now... telia sonera say that the next delivery will be in january.
It could be samsung that has problems keeping track of the deliverys.
They could have been stolen in the way.
Or there could be some Telia Sonera executives, and employees at Telia Sonera International Carrier and so on that has gotten the first batch for their use. Meaning that there were no modems left for consumer... (sure, then its still a PR-stunt, cause its not publicly avalible, but then its not due to samsung not delivering on promise).
We dont know whats the truth.

Lithuania, 16 Dec 2009We 1 year ago already implemented in our country 4G Where ... morein lithuania you have WIMAX(WiMAX, meaning Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology that provides wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission modes, from point-to-multipoint links to portable and fully mobile internet access. The technology provides up to 10 Mbit/s broadband speed without the need for cables. The technology is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard (also called Broadband Wireless Access) so the speed in your country is only 10 Mbps while in scandinavia in up to 100 Mbps and WIMAX is not GSM TECHNOLOGY like the 4G network in Scandinavia

Marsc, 15 Dec 2009This is not 4G... 4G = 1 GB!!!A 4G cellular system must have target peak data rates of up to approximately 100 Mbit/s for high mobility such as mobile access and up to approximately 1 Gbit/s for low mobility such as nomadic/local wireless access, according to the ITU requirements

The way LTE being considered all over, itseems 3G will not be as much hit as 2G. It looks like LTE will take over 3G even before 3G can penetrate into different parts of world...

[deleted post]Both hardware & software has a lot of catching up to do to make much use of these faster net speeds - especially in mobiles. If this was available now, it really wouldn't be much use - a couple of years will be good timing for us all - still, great to know what is in the pipeline!
*Every country has their fair share of the 'not so brights' (many of which I work with)!
Do we really need to attack each other? Peace everyone!! V
