Not bad at all, in 2015 13mp is mainstream and vrec 1080p, so even in 2015 these chip good survive :)

in this article we read Broadcom VideoCore IV records 1080p video, takes 20MP photos and here Everyone Loses Their Minds, why?
no one said a phone with 20 mpx.
just look at comments, this is what i don't understand and bothers me.

well this is not a phone it's only a chip that goes up to 20mpx and hd recording an 5-8mpx is plenty enought with good lighhting and flash.. a basic consumers will go at it.... it will not replace any good only dedicated camera even dlsr because of lens... but an ordinary consumer like us will go for an all rounder on...camera/phone/music..^_^ not a bag full of dlsr with lens--a pocket cam recorder and an radio/dvdplayer around ^_^

20mpx is a waste in a cameraphone as the sensor will be so small that it will be nearly useless in all but the most well lit of conditions. That is unless they come up with some new killer sensor technology.
2 to 5 mpx is enough for a cameraphone as that seems to be the sweet spot for small sensors. Also, considering what most people use cameraphone shots for (facebook; twitpix; blogs, etc..) why the hell would anyone needs 20mpx photos for that? Answer: They don't.

Kevin, 21 Dec 2009I think you miss the point, mobile phones do not compete wi... moreunderstandable, and I whole heartedly agree, portability is a great asset a phone has over an SLR, but when people start saying things like phones for PROFESSIONAL photography and implying that a phone can outshoot an SLR, thats when things are just simply wrong, and as such deserves an a good straightening up

I think you miss the point, mobile phones do not compete with SLRs, rather compact cameras.
And the whole point is you are far more likely to have your phone on than a compact or SLR. So if you miss the moment it does not matter how good your sensor is, you have missed it.
I have an SLR which I love, but the phone serves a need that my SLR just cannot compete with, it is with almost all the time.

I agree! This is a joke...lol. Never EVER the phones will take photos as a dedicated cameras do. This is a mirage every cellphone company try to sell "5 mp camera etc...outstanding photo quality" lol Yup,sure! :))If that's outstanding, then SLR cameras what is? lol

now professional photo... morethat's a joke. . . any REAL photographer can tell you, a small format sensor will NEVER EVER replace the ones found in SLRs, even the minuature 4/3s format sensors take photos infinately better than any camera phone sensor, dont even get me started with the larger and even more capable APS-C and "Full Frame" format sensors. . . thats just on the same sort of topic of this whole chip business
in the life of a REAL photographer, professional or hobbyist alike, theres no getting around the interchangible lens system, lenses with REAL OPTICAL zoom capability, REAL adjustable aperature f-stops, FULL manual control, dedicated light meters, dedicated AF sensors, OPTICAL viewfinders, and external flashes (mounted or wireless)... and all sorts of other things you just cant put into a phone and still have it be practical
if Apple (or any phone manufacturer for that matter) goes out claiming DSLR performance on ANY cameraphone it rolls out itll be laughed at for all eternity but the likes of Nikon and Canon, companies that live and breathe photography and optics, companies still around from the beginnings of SLR photography, companies trusted by photographers worldwide

Please be in nokia in phones, those samsung lot never make thier video software standardised, so you still have to reconvert them. i myself have had a samsung camcorder and I8910 phone, both of which state as having MP4 video recording and they don't play on my plastation 3 and i have to reconvert them

why is no one realising that this not about the camera sensor or lens or imaging software?!?! people, please, this is a chip! a chip, not your camera! and broadcom is just indicating the 'processing power' in layman's terms by telling 20MP... nobody said anything about a 20mp cameraphone.... so please stop criticizing this brilliant piece of technology on irrelevant basis!

When will the general public realise that the more megapixels a camera sensor has, the more likely the picture will be of lower quality? Except for the most expensive digital SLRs, more megapixels generally means grainier and noisier images. Even the best DSLRs struggle with the problem.
In a mobile phone, 20 megapixels would be riduculous and completely pointless. The 10-12MP specs now being announced are totally stupid as it is. No lens small enough to be viable for a mobile would ever be able to resolve enough optical detail to make a 20MP sensor worth it.
People need to stop equating megapixel counts with quality. They are pretty much, inversely proportional. Not proportional. A 20MP sensor would just fill the user's memory card up with stupidly large files containing noisy bogus "image" data. Efforts should be made towards putting better lenses in handset and improving their noise performance in low light conditions and at higher ISO settings.
This isnt going to happen though until the public stops equating the megapixel count with quality.

hey GSMArena people...since you guys are so active in deleting our posts...why don't you guys spend some time making a review for the Motorola Milestone/DROID, huh? do what you're actually supposed to be doing, not reading our comments & deleting them, get it? i don't care if you delete this very post or ban me from posting after this, but you guys need to get things straightened out there...whatever that is that you guys have with Motorola, solve it for your own good...cause you just lost a viewer & i wouldn't be surprised if you lose thousands more tomorrow, for your biased/flawed marketing schemes! stop supporting a few brands & neglecting a couple entirely...at least be fair to your viewers...us! without us your site is nothing...so don't play around with us...it's not a threat, it's a request on behalf of all of us...this is my last post on this site...you guys have a Merry Christmas, all of you, the administrators, the employees, & my fellow viewers...take care everyone, God bless! :)

Just hope that the mobile industry will focus more on improving the lens rather than increasing the megapixel, but is good to have this chip inside the phone.

Personally, I've found that DSLR is very ugly with it's boring design, not like mobile phone. It weight a lot lot lot more than mobile phones, but can only take picture, can't send them via bluetooth or upload it at the moment. And do u know what? We always having our phone with us, not like digicam, let alone that DSLR. So we happy with our mobile phones and it's high MP ix since it's mean higher quality in the mobile phones world.

Even if this chip gets a go in handsets in 2 years time i still prefer to use a proper photocamera but it would make a very good platform to built on,it can only get better,technology is advancing so fast i wonder what kind of hi tech handsets we'll be using in 2020 ? anyway, many Greetings Cengiz from Istanbul.

Jon : although you seem to have some idea of photography, you clearly heave biiig omissions...
more mpx can stretch the optical irresolution to it's maximum and no more (the rest is interlaced/interpolation )
for example:
i have the 5d - 5d II and the folowing lenses : 16-35 f2.8 II,24-70 f2.8,50 1.4, 70-200 f2.8L
the only lenses that may touch the 20 mpx in overall are the 50 1.4 and 16-35 when they are closed to f2.8-4(50mm) and f4-5.6(16-35)
the 70-200 gets only in the center (maybe) close to 20 mpx and even if i set f8 i don't get more rezolution... (at least not at 70mm and 200mm)
the 24-70 is at it's best maybe at 12...
so although i got some more detail from the lenses with the 20mpx camera i would of gotten the same from a 16 mpx camera
and this is at iso 50-100 normal shutter speeds and a closed aperture ..
and don't forget that each of those lenses are worth thousands of dollars and weigh a few kg
5mpx is useless in mobiles... let alone 12-20 ...
just zoom in and cheek out how they look ...

there some things that can't be changed... in order to get high rez you need good-heavy-big optics.. and that's just nu possible with mobile phones
sure, they may eliminate the very bottom of ultra compact cameras, but they still can't compete with mid-range compacts (and i don't see them doing so in the close future)
when you make a mobile you must include the price so
500$ mobile may compete with a 100$ camera (barely )
500$ mobile can't compete with a 100-500$ camera that's the same size as a mobile(hence larger sensor and bigger optics) and all that it does is shoot pictures... it's common sense ...
want 20mpx on a camera phone ? don't spend it on marketing shi. just re-size the pictures from your mobile to 20mpx and get the same shi.
you need the space,price,weight in order to make an ok camera
