But still, I agree, are happy enough with the quality of pictures that come out of their mobiles, a mobile is a camera. You dont even need a monster camera/mobile combination to achive that.

Most consumers dont want more than one device for doing it all... Sure, there are still some people buying MP3 players, as they want better audio quality... A large part of sells for MP3 players today, however is because the lack of understanding of the capabilities of mobiles... But the sales decline for dedicated MP3 players will keep on goind, and soon, there might not even be dedicated Mp3 players... as most people will use cell-phones for this.
Even today digital compact cameras has lost some of the market to mobiles. But there is quite a big gap in quality today... but as the gap gets smaller, the mobile industry will take more and more of the market. Here, however there will always be a market left, for entusiasts, cause of the limitations of a mobile. But in a not to distant future, mobiles will have replaced cameras for most people. (a powerfull Image processor makes the gap smaller in two areas, picture quality, and speed...).
Most people will be just happy enough with the picture you will get out of your mobiles, in a few years time, when we have decent image processing in mobiles. (most people does not look for the best quality... thats why a lot settle for cheaper tvs, dont spend thousands of dollars on hifi, and dont get themselves a DSLR camera... even today, in comparison to DSLR most digital cameras sold are not good)
And when most people see cameras as the built in thing in their mobiles, a mobile will be a camera.

The battle can begin but there always has a barrier for sure. Things will stay where they are really made for. PHONE is a phone. CAMERA is a camera. No matter how much effort has been exerted to strengthen a thread, it can never parallel a rope.

about the megapixel race.
Sure 12 megapixels in a mobile will never be as good as 12 megapixels in a medium-higher range compact camera... and no where near DSLR.
However, it actually capture more amount of details then a 8 megapixel sensor in a dedicated digital camera (the issue is not details, but how it capure them).
A GPU/DIP/IPU, whatever like this, at least gives the processing power, that few mobiles today have for their pictures. Using this chip with any mobile camera module on the market today would give us better pictures. Take the Satio and Pixon 12, they dont have enough Image processing power to take full advantage of the 12 megapixel module (this chip would still leave them behind mid-high range digital compacts, but it would make them come closer).
But then we have the lens issue, and the image sensor related light capturing issue.
Well, the lens we cant do very much about, they will always be small in mobiles, but development will make them somewhat better... and looking at the somewhat more serious cameraphones, they do have better lenses than the standard phone. In the future, they might even be a bit bigger. (ufortunately the development of fluid lenses has yet to resolve in to a product, this could boost the capabilities of small lenses for mobile cameras and shrink compact digital cameras lenses...)
But when it comes to light capturing, there is some development. Both in sensor-type, and in sensor technology. One development here is to use some of the pixels as subpixels, just for capturing light... but then you only get half the resolution. That would turn 20 mpix in to 10mpix but with better light capturing and dynamics.
Some of you fail to understand that not all people here just uploads pictures to facebook or at the most watch them on their monitors.
For printing you at least need 3 megapixels for printing in stanard photo format. And if you want photo quality for A4 format, you need at least 8mp..probably more.
So now we know, that there is a need for more pixels than 2 or 0.3 that some of you think.
12 perhaps not so much for direct printing in photo quality (as this would probably be enough for bigger prints than A4).
But here is another thing that most of you missed. Resolution zooming!
Optical zoom in a mobile will probably never be a big thing, cause it require quite a good lens (not to end up with distortions), the zooming mechanism use more space, and that will always make the phone thicker than a version without optical zoom.
What you then do, is just to fit more megapixels than consumers need, and let them zoom in on images (crop), before printing. Sure, this will never be as good as optical zoom in a compact camera, but it might result in better iages than optical zoom in a mobile, due to the lens issues.
So there we have it:
20 megapixels can be used for zooming (the megapixels used in the end is then decided by the amount of zoom)
20 megapixels can be used for capturing a 10 megapixel image with more light capturing and better dynamics. (the combination of both this features is the reason to use normal pixels and not sub-pixels for light capturing).
The lens issues in mobiles will limit them from ever reach the segment of users in need of a high-end "compact" digital camera or DSLR.
But the low end mid range digital compacts will have a hard time competing with the versatility of mobiles. (and some low end digital compacts today has even been passed by mobiles, when it comes to image quality, and lens quality... bigger lens is not always better.. a crappy big lens does not result in better images than a really good small one... and the image processing power in that segment is limited). And with good image processors in mobiles, the battle can begin.

WOW. . . 20MP camera phone, more pixels than my SLR on a sensor not even 1/10 the size, thats GENIOUS, seriously camera phones only need to stay in the 3-5 M range, even dedicated compact digital cameras SHOULD stay in the 7-ish range, double digits only belong on SLRs with their larger format sensors. . . but stupid consumers only really care about the pixel count and just a number to brag about, and camera manufacturers are unfortunately more than happy to oblige

On topic,not to interrsted in the Mpixels but very interested in the video and with a mini HDMI socket or laser projector the next prob is memory but by then we will most likely have 128GB ssd in mobiles..Its using 40nM PROCCESS very up to date...

wow. broadcom is playing catch up with nvidia n its not even doing a decent job at it. nvidia's tegra SoC delvers 12mp, full hd, mini HDMI and amazing 3D quality above anything else on a handheld device running at less than a watt of power, to make things worse 4 broadcom nvidia's release tegra 2 next yr wit at least double the power and will probably double that the yr after which means nvidia will probably be 3 times as powerful by the time this is released. plus yeah as many of you have said mp's rnt everything, if the chip cant process the image properly it wont turn out as good, u can bet nvidia will do a great job of that, but its also based on the lens and thats down to the phone manufacturer.

the 12mp and 8mp phones sometimes take good enough pics that are comparable to a old sony cyber shot DSC W50, a camera that came out during the days N73 was number 1
that just shows are the mobile manufacture's are perhaps purposely slowing progressing the actual image quality but to get the mobile to sell they start the whole mp war
the best example is the fact that even now xenon isn't standard regardless of 5/8/12 which are high mp counts
besides its pointless to have a camera nowadays, people just take 8 million g.ay pics of themsevels
so its better to have worse quality so you dont see their re.tarded face

Well 2 Mp is enough on a 1920x1080 monitor until you want to zoom in on a part of the image, edit or print. Then you will need higher resolution. And you will never know if you want to do that until after you have taken the image, right? =)

Megapixel count matters more when you're printing it in a large size or editing. Otherwise, it's really not as relevant as I used to think.

as always, the mp will increase but not the quality
hopefully this will break the curse and no only record actual non glitching HD but play back mkv's and stuff smooth weather outputting or just on the cell
