Series 40 is getting touchscreens, dual-SIMs and QWERTY keyboards

29 December, 2009
Nokia has big plans for all three of its platforms. Despite the huge growth of affordable smartphones, the S40 platform will go on, getting touchscreens, dual-SIM and QWERTY keyboards, while Symbian and...

I already prefer S40 to Symbian S60 and i'm really happy about new features coming. Who need a "smart" system when this is not able to remind appointments (organizer of S60 is buggy)?
I own a S40 with wifi, gps, 5MP zeiss camera, SD slot (etc.), and i wouldn't exchange it with a N Series, no way!

but I totally disagree when you said Nokia could learn a thing or two from Chinese dual SIM phones. Its the other way around. Are you sure that Nokia doesn't know about dual SIM phones or technology? GSM was created in Europe not in China.

and how come these Chinese dual SIM phones are clones/copies of Nokia, Apple, Blackberry. etc.

Anonymous, 06 Jan 2010That's the strategy of the almighty brand....keep so called... moreI don't see anything mighty about the brand your talking about.

AFAIK, all manufacturers will continue to come up with new phones. For them to continue doing this, people have to buy new phones to replace their old ones. And this cycle goes on and on.

If you don't want something getting upgraded or a new phone from being made, hey, you got to convince all the people who help this cycle goes on.

If nobody buys your almighty brand then for sure, they'll stop upgrading or making new phones.

Anonymous, 04 Jan 2010I think that adding touchscreen to s40 is the worst idea I ... moreThat's the strategy of the almighty brand....keep so called "upgrading" its low-end phones...so much to the point they still can't match "old" mid/high end phones (like N95/5800)...

Part of the reason is the company can then keep on releasing so called "new phones", bombarding pages of various media, showroom space for various electronics / phone shops, so to ensure no one else (who can afford to put so much $ on advertising), printing out more boxes, putting more old (unsold) handsets to the landfills...and eventually drive the polar bears out of the ice cubes...

I think most users of 1100 don't care if the almighty continues to offer 3310...as to these users, as long as the phone can make / receive calls / SMS, that's all they care. Why continue to "upgrade" 1100?

I think that adding touchscreen to s40 is the worst idea I ever heard, firstly because s40 and s60 look quite similar, and everyone complains about s40 because it lacks stuff like multitasking and a gallery which s60 has, yet even s60 isn't fully complete yet in touch department, why not focus on that instead? It will only get mobile noobs wondering whether the best phone is the 5530 or the new s40 touchscree. WHat will nokia say??? The newer one has fewer capabilities that the older?????
Extremely stupid. S40 is dead, I just got rid of my s40 phone to buy a touch s60 phonee, which I enjoy more.

I wonder what resolution these s40 touchscreens shall run on. I hope it's not nHD too, otherwise I really really don't see the point. WVGA is ideal...

It's about time to upgrade S40. They might add multitasking to S40, which SE phones are already into. Cheaps get pimped.

I still own one and I think it is awesome and I still consider up there in some of the best phones. Its strong, looks cool and has almost every feature you could hope for. But don't get me wrong, although it is great that it has heaps of onboard memory, it is pain stakingly slow. Sure it's fine to transfer a few photos off, but when trying to copy about 6GB of MP3's onto it at 700-800KB\s... I think you know what I'm getting at.

There is nothing wrong with dual sim phones. Dual sim is a very helpful technology in my part of the world. I am glad that Nokia is getting into it becoz currently, it's only Samsung of the big 3 who makes great dual sim/standby phones. Heck, Nokia could learn a thing or two from the Chinese dual sim phones. You won't find any phone that can function as a regular TV set except a china phone. If Nokia could make a capacitive touchscreen dual sim/standby s60 symbian smartphone that can also be a TV I would definitely buy it.
