29 December, 2009
Nokia has big plans for all three of its platforms. Despite the huge growth of affordable smartphones, the S40 platform will go on, getting touchscreens, dual-SIM and QWERTY keyboards, while Symbian and...

I have bought one actually a 1,5 year ago and I still didnt found phone a phone that I would even consider replace my N95 with. Yeah its maybe not best phone but i think it still rocks and I would go so far to say It s better then an Ipohne. You can download a lot of programs, and its definitly not slow. I would say that it s pritty fast. I had no problem with the speed of the internal memory. Okey it takes 3 seconds to open your images. It works fine for me. I would rather say that the internal memory works pritty good.

They'll just market it for a new phone to get sales. But what about the people like myself who paid alot of money for the N97 hoping for it to live up to its hype, but to be only let down by its bug riddle UI and lagging hardware? Will we ever get a Nokia N97 firmware v3.0 based on Symbian^2 to ease the pain? I don't think so...

And the 10" tablet, I think we're talking about phones that can be carried in the pocket and are in direct line of competition.
And as far as catching up to new iPhone is concerned I think the catching up is still with the original iPhone for other manufacturers (in terms of User Interface and other positives of iPhone). Newer iPhones are just improvements by Apple to it or else they'll fall far behind. In other words Apple is "catching up" in other areas...

We shouldn't mix up features in a phone by how a phone is marketed. I mean iPhone was the gadget of the year in which it was released, but it didn't had video recording or bluetooth file transfer, things that were taken for granted in other phones. It didn't even had a feature as basic as message forwarding... People who actually hacked the iPhone to bring average phone features to it actually knew what it lacked but they still bought it. The success of iPhone is clearly not its features but innovative use of technology which made every other phone manufacturer catching up to it, but still Apple hasn't introduced basic features out of the box. I wonder what stops them. Probably years of mastering a technology cannot be achieved so easily in a new OS. Apple knows it. Once every phone manufacturer has a distinctive and natural touch User Interface, iPhone will be history. Atleast until Steve Jobs can get his hands on some other tech to be introduced in iPhone.
It seems Nokia phones are the best bet for the continuity in evolution of Mobile Technology, so you don't have to give up on features that you have gotten used to.
Another example is Micosoft's Windows OS.

instead of making S60 the standard UI for all its phones, Nokia is again committing another one of its unbelievably foolish mistakes (N96,5230 anyone?)

BTW, GSMArena has made a mistake. Symbian^1 has already been implemented in S60v5 devices.

But, should we have to rely on third party developers to implement the long awaited upgrade to camera options, for example? Sorry if I have misunderstood.

Maybe Symbian^2 and up will give the developers what they really need to fully optimised the OS and give it the ability to stand up against the competition. The way I see Symbian going, is that it'll feature on mostly mid range and the occasional high end devices, with the flagships being Maemo and low end being S40.

My Nokia N97 has been a n... moreThey don't have to listen to consumers/end users per se if they had tightly synergized with the Symbian dev community (something that I suspect have been missing for years now..) and had aggressively pursued to encourage other Symbian phone makers i.e Samsung and SE to step up their game.Which is why we're seeing these "BETA" so-called high end N-series,Omnia and Satio crapola going on.People paid good money and yet they still have to wait for like 1-2 firmware updates just for fixes. We really have to wonder because all the Big 3 are equally responsible for over-promising,over-pricing and under-delivering in each' Symbian HIGH END models' variations. If they're half assing the better models, then what about the rest in the product lineup?See?Take the Omnia HD for example. It doesn't make sense that there's a guy out there (those in the know knows who) who can continually improve the firmware gratis when Samsung already budgeted tens of millions for their own dept. The ineptitude is clear but there must be a linking factor.Same goes for Nokia and SE only diff is that there's no real ROM cooking efforts going on for some phones by whoever. The Symbian platform needs drastic and courageous implementations sooner rather than later. Why can't Nokia etc open source the firmwares and provide adequate tools straight to Symbian's devs? The new drawing board according to this latest Nokia forecast SHOULD INCLUDE AND FINALIZE the lowest base hardware spec to scale on so that smoother platform integration can occur universally on every supporting brands. An S60 V5 user shouldn't be stuck with the same thing.Backward compatibility. The devs should be given more leeway to have a final say to determine best current techs that optimizes the OS better along with manufacturing costs' concerns. Why screw an OS top to bottom down to square off the costs are just mind boggling when it should be PROPERLY thought out the other way round???

Zane Chute, 29 Dec 2009The thing about Nokia is that they advertise something too ... moreI have to agree with you on that. My Nokia N97 has been a nightmare since day one! When firmware v20 or Nokia N97 ver2 was released, I thought the majority of the bugs would be fixed, but I was wrong. Sure it added kinetic scrolling and other UI improvements, but I still get memory full errors, etc. The v20 is what the phone should have had at release and now be at a much more stable version, not the 'beta-like' v10, v11, etc. Now my phone is deteriorating; the silver highlights are wearing off, the screen is getting bright spots and the camera flares due to the scratching of the lens because of a faulty cover. I am very disappointed with Nokia. Their phones used to be the feature-packed-must-have-phones, but due to either poor engineering, stubbornness, just being blind to whats going on around them, or all of the above, they have become sub-par. To me there is always one annoyance with each of their phones. From the blatantly obvious and painfully slow internal memory on the N95 8GB to the horribly buggy and agonizingly powerless N97, it just used to suprise me how they could miss or ignore these. However, my hope has been reignited the recent release of the promising Maemo 5 N900 and the news of the new Symbian OS's and Maemo 6. Come on Nokia, don't let us down! Listen to the consumers.
