Sony's new Z5 series phones actually use a custom 25MP camera sensor

02 September, 2015
Sony has been persistent in using the same 20.7MP sensor for its flagship camera setup since the Xperia Z1. Not any more.

TechLord-Entertainme, 09 Aug 2016Hello. What is the pixel size of the sensor's pixels? ... moreWell the whole situation is a little more complex than what the sketch indicates.
Have a look at the corners of the squares in this sketch (related to the BB Priv)
http://eskerahn.dk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/BlackBerry_Priv_Camera_Sensor.png
The circle is optically limiting what any sensor can see with the optics used, so they try to use a sensor that is as close to that as possible.
If you look closely at the corners of the sketch, you would see that they COULD have used a slightly higher sensor to get a larger 1:1 image. And they COULD have used a slightly wider sensor to get a larger 16:9 image. But as larger sensors are costly, they have accepted an existing sensor rather than having one custom-tailored.

    Hello.
What is the pixel size of the sensor's pixels?

And can't Sony and Nokia just use the full sensor resolution?
That's better than matching those ugly standards. Both 4:3 and 16:9 can be extracted from it.

AnonD-152638, 03 Sep 2015Well it's not that easy. To have any benefits from higher ... moreInteresting.
So the extra pixels may create more noise with less sharpness compared to a 16 Megapixel Sensor at a fairly large size ( for a phone) like the 16 megapixel Sensors on both Galaxy S6 and LG G4 - these are the best so far
on Android and may be hard to beat.
I hope Sony can beat their own Sensors on the S6 and G4- but so far they have not unless they improve the Z5 Production Units beyond the early Prototypes- which rarely happens Software can not overcome Optics- only preserve or slightly enhance it .

Cod3rror, 03 Sep 2015Is anybody else not impressed with these samples? They look... morebecause you are a fanboy, of course you say so.

Nokia Lumia 1020 was marketed as 41MP camera, tough it could have captured 'only' 38MP. So what's wrong with marketing it as 25MP? It is a 25MP sensor after all.

Becoz of that question I asked myself why would manufactures get back to 4:3 in tablets?

I know nothing about phone/digital camera. All I know is if I want to take pics with maximum pixels (my phone is 13MP), it allows 4:3 ratio only. If I want 16:9 ratio, the camera will take pics up to 10 megapixels only. Don't understand it & I find it frustrating. This is exactly the same situation with my Sony Cybershot DSC-HX60V digital camera.

And to those people like the author's friend who made sweeping condescending remarks - Stop criticizing people for using 4:3 ratio because we are restricted by the hardware & don't have a choice!

I would love to take 16:9 ratio using maximum 13 megapixels but impossible on my phone.

Sony is known for aggressive post processing, look at initial _production_ unit shots for M2 (non aqua). Those were horrendous, but became bearable after a few updates (around the time the aqua version popped up). Z1C has also a pretty big loss of details due to post-processing. Z3C is quite good, but there are still some oversharpening artifacts in there, just like with these Z5 series. So yes, while they get better over time, those pre-production shots are still pretty much what you are likely to see at release.

These are production products so they still have a lot of tweaking etc etc to do before it launches. I just think you getting ahead of yourself to think this is the final quality shots. They stressed this so many times that its production units and not retail units. So take it easy. It will definitely improve. If the retail products looks like this then your comment is valid. For now... not at all.

Now if they would only finally stop overdenoising and oversharpening their images... Those two shots are full of sharpening artifacts from the leftover noise and the image looks flat because denoising killed details as well. Here's hoping for RAW mode.

this multi-aspect ratio sensor was wayyy before the Nokia N9. The Panasonic Lumix LX3 has done this. although it's a CAMERA not a CAMERAPHONE.
