21 January, 2010
Nope, there's no mistake in that title up there. Today, in a swift game-changing maneuver, Nokia announced that all their smartphones get lifetime voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation through Ovi Maps for free...

You know your cellphone is outdated when you are no longer first in line for updates (Nokia N82).

spike, 22 Jan 2010As first time NOKia user with 5800 Navi Edition, I feel lik... moreHahaha, so true!

That's why I never trust "special editions" of phones and such... you pay only to have the feature available for everyone else down the road at no cost. It's called milking the loyal customer, that's what it is....

If it helps you, I think it was an afterthought, a containment measure to avoid an exodus of their user base. This is clearly different from their typical (and commercially understandable) business practice of milking the customer with many identical models.

I fell they're almost in that position of being completely lost. Being a Nokia user for years (since analog models), I can't help but think that they are doing that because they don't know what else to do with their smartphone portfolio.

Thanks Nokia! Apple would charge you a arm and a half for services like this.

                            all or just selected models?
Right now, the only suppoorted models are: Nokia X6, Nokia N97 mini, E72, E55, E52, Nokia 6730 classic, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, Nokia 5230.
And on the download site, there is no information about free navigation coming to other mobiles.

Anonymous, 21 Jan 2010just got it and it works fine..EXCEPT FOR ONE THING.. even ... moreI suppose you are talking about charges from the carrier for connection to the internet and not through WiFi. So, in this case, you have to go to: Menu>Applications>Location>Positioning>Positioning Methods and uncheck "Assisted GPS" (stay only with "Integrated GPS"). I hope this solves the problem.

It's is not for ALL phones. It's for NEW phones. 3rd AND 5th.
Old phones like N95 will not have free nav.
