Pressure-sensitive touchscreens are the next step

27 January, 2010
As the popularity of full-touch devices continues to grow rapidly, manufacturers are working as hard as they can on delivering better user experience. This latest innovation in the area concerns the...

so we have resistive and capacitive. we have haptic and tactile feedback. could we not have a malleable screen?

I don't see how this is the next step? What's the difference between resistive and pressure screen, when they both use pressure to block the conduction on a certain spot? Every manufacturer is slowly discontinuing the production of resistive touchscreens and installing the capactive ones in their new models. Developing pressure screens would mean getting right back to the start.

I prefer capacitive over resistive any day. No need to calibrate like you do with resistive. And I love the glass screens on capacitive devices. It just feels more natural and smoother.

i don't think that is the next step.
              that is the present step
the next step is 3d lcd in mobile, that is the next step.
amoled is old now. even this is wow but it isn't so called next step.

It will probably be a tech that is not as responsive as either resistive or capacitive but over a period of time and development it'll improve but I doubt it'll ever come close to responsiveness of Capacitive.
There are problems with Capacitive tech that it is little more responsive than needed.
We need something that'll come close to the responsiveness of capacitive and still be accurate. Accuracy is probably most important thing for a touch screen. Capacitive has a huge negative here.
Stage is set for next gen resistive displays like ones seen on N97 mini, Touch Diamond2 etc. or this one.

And about glass screens, probably a laterally strained layer of the pressure-sensitive material can be laid that is tight enough ideally over a thin glass surface. The display sholdn't be burried deep within layers as it'll drastically reduce touch operating viewing angles.

Phew, there's so much things to take care off.

you are being silly its obvious the screens are not capacitative, as capacitative cannot be pressed and can't register pressure, only resistive does, so it will be based on resistive.Don't see how this could improve the game world though.

I wonder how you would know how much pressure to apply to the screen for different purposes? Will the screen recognise two levels of pressure: 'soft and hard' or there would be medium, very hard etc included.

I think that it does not matter what the differences are in term of technology.

The most important thing to know is the purpose of having such technology.

It is to be able to have two inputs at the same time with one physical contact of a finger.

The first one is the physical touch on the screen. The second one is an 'extra' pressure.

What constitutes a pressure? Well, you would think that by retaining your finger longer in time on the screen you may constitute a pressure? How would you keep that pressure if you move from one point to another?

Tweaking the software will not do it automatically because you can only choose one side to be locked in. And by default, it is false.

There's a need of a second input: some type of pressure by electric mean. That's the science part.

But why do all that? It is to be able to do more multi-tasking function.

"Peratech already signed a license contract with the Japanese display manufacturer Nissha, which makes screens for LG, NINTENDO and more. The first tech gadgets to use the new pressure-enabled screens are expected to hit the shelves in April."

Possibly a Nintendo DS2 with pressure sensitive touchscreens?

                              Do want.

Resistive touchscreen have no problem about this isue, developers can fix this by software adaption on UI.
