04 February, 2010
There have been quite a few rumors about the fate of Symbian, but now the OS has entered a new stage of its existence - its code is now open source. This move began in June 2008, when Nokia bought Symbian...

Does this mean that we won't have to hack our symbian with HelloOX for "optimal" use of the phone??

GIGI'S, 04 Feb 2010could you explain in plain word what this means? coz phones like N97 based on symbian OS does'nt come upto the expectation of the customers. problems like system crash and hanging up have been very disturbing. making symbian open source will be helpful in removing these issues

Android will never be number one, because nokia will never use it on their phone

samsung is ditching symbian (and winmo), in favor of their bada OS and android. at any given time, i'd choose an android phone over a symbian-powered one due to the faster development rate of the android.

                    This news are amazing!

now you can integrate the system in many devices like pcs, netbooks which are then powered by this nice os

of course with the requirement to modify the code and apis

maemo 6 and symbian 4 will have high potencial to be the leaders the next years when nokia will change the ui and hardware improvements

also the ovi store developed very fast and everyone can observe the increased download rates

qt will be a very good solution to get higher capabilties and more developers to create apps

now we should expect that many feature based functions we will find in the future like

you cannot upgrade and won't be let to upgrade any symbian^1 to symbian^3 or something, because of: hardware requirements, software/driver incompatibilities, commercial/marketing reasons. Buy, buy, buy. EOF.

I dont think u can upgrade to Symbian^3 from Symbian^1. These versions are not for end users like us. These are for the phone manufacturers to develop the hardware that can run it.All we ppl can do is to expect refinement in the firmware from the manufacturers like nokia, samsung and sony(all these have Symbian^1 devices)

                              1. Android is also fully open-source. You can download the whole kit, make whatever changes you want, compile it and deploy it on whatever device you want.

                              2. Symbian^3 is the same thing. There might be some initial hype from different groups trying to do something with it, but it'll probably fizzle out.

I'm willing to bet that Google is a lot more active at enhancing the core of Android than the Symbian Foundation who've taken two years to update and re-release S60.

                                  a very good initiative .
now people can see more & more phones having this os. symbian is a very powerful os designed especially for mobile phones .windows 7 & android could not also match its performance as they require more cpu,ram and they are inefficient for mobile phones.

now companies such as samsung , sony ericsson,lg could adopt symbian os and produce cheaper handsets with this as they currently bundling their cheap handsets with an underperforming open source os .
