04 February, 2010
There have been quite a few rumors about the fate of Symbian, but now the OS has entered a new stage of its existence - its code is now open source. This move began in June 2008, when Nokia bought Symbian...

This is a brilliant move which will further popularize the world's widest used smartphone operating system and will enable outside contributors to refine certain elements if necessary. By 2012 teenagers without a smartphone OS mobile device will be viewed with interest. Good move, Nokia.

Andreas, 04 Feb 2010Why would you be a developer for symbian, then you got Andr... moreBecause Android's marketshare is tiny when compared to Symbian. A developer would rather make software for the plaform that has more users. Symbian has hundreds of millons of users, while Android has tens of millions at best; but this will probably make no sense to you, since you don't seem to be a developer. You just fell for the hype and believed Android was the only way.

White Tiger, 04 Feb 2010Wait for Microsoft windows mobile 7(Pink) OS. It will break... moreLol, no. WinMo is crap, Windows 7 is amazing, but WinMo is still crap and much less popular than Windows for PC. It has a tiny marketshare when compared to Symbian while Windows for PC has a gigantic marketshare, they are completely different. WinMo 7 will break no records.

i don't think this means you don't need to hack the phone to installed unsigned apps etc

to a non average user its interesting to see if we'll get cooked Symbian 3 roms but i think the "open source" is basically a invitation to developers saying that using Symbian code won't cost anything anymore.

SE and Samsung already have Symbian, be interesting to see if Moto or LG start making Symbian 3 phones

We all know that the fate of symbian depend on nokia decision to choose large ram anf today standard ,processor, symbian need to make their users think that its system is not only more capable but also very solid and stable
