Update this, update that, update everywhere - as if it will kill us if we don't. Yes, updates are meant to tune/fix existing features and introduce new ones - but we seem to be conditioned to think that our lives depend on it. Advertising at its finest, I guess
One more thing, we're using phones, not sensitive hospital, or bank servers (which actually NEED constant security updates).

having the phone mfgr. AND the carrier dictate your core OS updates is just wrong.
it'd be like buying a dell pc, a security vulnerability being found in IE, and dell releasing a patch for it.

This is sad. Marshmallow is right around the corner, and last year's version is not even used by a quarter of the user base?
Android OEMs have ZERO incentive to update your old phone. Their main revenue is by selling new devices, not updating old ones. This is the same as Windows PCs. The difference is, PC OEMs are not handling Windows update, thus they can still focus in selling new hardware, while users of existing machines get patches. Not the case with Android.
Android ecosystem is broken. How Google and the OEMs handled the stagefright vulnerability should be a clear indication the lack of care.
If you have a lot of free time to support yourself with custom ROM, Android is for you. For everybody else, I would advise you to look elsewhere.

Using percentages is a little misleading as Android has an 82.8% share in OS used on phones globally.

The largest contribution to this are carriers. They slow updates down and give little incentive for manufacturers to make firmware updates for their models. Most people do not understand this, but it is true.

Lollipop adaptation is slow.. Many OEM don't bother to updates their products, even the flagship usually only get 12-24 months update support and the update is also released not timely, well its business, they need profit, so you better buy new phones for latest updates..
and I think most of people really wants their phone to get the latest and greatest version of android, if they say otherwise it's only to make themself a little better..

Why slow adoption? Because for example, Samsung stops to provide updates to most of devices after 18 months. Not everyone want/need to buy new device every 1,5 year.
