Everytime I have tried to bring it up though I have been verbally abused by Sony fans (who look on the brand more as some kind of religion than manufacturer).

Sony camera sensor tech is the best in the mobile business, the image processing though, needs re-thinking.

If you read a lot of Sony's high end phone reviews you will see that Sony's camera software isn't optimised well enough like other phone manufacturers. They need to get a proper team to develop new camera software from the ground up. I always used Sony phones, but also came to realise that this was always an issue for them. I hope this deal helps iron out this big issue. I also use Huawei phones and most times the P7 and P8 does REALLY great work of Sony's cameras cause its down to software.

Sony Is making Excellent Camera Sensors with remarkable technologies. Sony is the best of the best in the sensor dept. No other camera sensor would come even close to Sony's sensor technology. Many mobile manufacturers make excellent camera smartphones With best image quality by equipping Sony Sensors in their devices. But why can't Sony make best camera smartphone with their very own software. To be frank Z5 PREMIUM is the only smartphone which has better camera than the previous ones and they still have to work on it. And Sony Must have even better camera software than the present one.

Sensor itself will not help. They have to focus on the driving software too.

Makes sense, Toshiba's fabs are great, but their engineering chops at making the cmos sensors are pretty stale. Would be a nice addition to Sony's current facilities.

Sony could perhaps use the Toshiba division in the lower end of the market perhaps, whilst they concentrate on the upper end???

Also as Aqua24 has pointed out, if Sony didn't buy them, maybe someone else would have, Huawei maybe????

Sony cmos sensor business is one of it's bright spot and acquiring toshiba's made good sense because if they don't buy it others will especially if that others is Samsung or other Chinese companies.

The only thing Sony needs to do is get someone to develop much better camera software for their own phones cause their phone software isnt as good as Samsung and even Huawei.

The Sony Exmor sensor in my Ascend P7 is pretty darn good. Images are incredibly sharp, colors are good, reasonable levels of image noise even in really bad lighting. I quite like Sony cameras. Can't really go wrong with it if it's from the high end segment.

Ok I know Samsung are still producing sensors, but their market share is tiny in comparison.
