Google to combine Chrome OS and Android into a single operating system

30 October, 2015
Google is working on merging the Chrome OS and Android into a single operating system. The news was first reported by Wall Street Journal but has since been confirmed by Google. The new OS, which is in the works for the past couple of year, is expected to be ready for a preview next year, but would be launched only in 2017.

Stuff the merge of ChromeOS and Android, how about they ditch the stupid JAVA virtual machine layer buried deep in Android, much like Tizen has done, and give us back the performance that these chips in our hardware were suppose to deliver.

JAVA is dead and a huge security risk, lay it to rest.

How about they fix the bloated crapware called Google Chrome (for Desktop) first?

It starts slowly and loads pages so slowly. Chrome is becoming what IE is: a bloated piece of garbage. Firefox is the new Chrome, it runs fast as Chrome is supposed to be. Heck, even Microsoft Edge now runs faster than Chrome.

Google should be able to make a larger dent if they want to. Microsoft cannot give away its software - its software is its bread and butter. Google on the other hand can afford to give away its software - its bread and butter is adverts.

It's been in a very early alpha stage since almost year and a half. Poor compatibility, rendering issues, inability to resize an app, as it was just poor virtual machine realization. And almost nothing in 1,5 years. With this speed it will be ready in some 10 years or even more.

Anonymous, 30 Oct 2015Oh yay, phone apps stretched to fill my computer monitor. :-|At first, yes, it will be like you said.
But, I'm an app developer and I know you just need to design a new XML file or modify the current one to adjust its elements to a bigger screen.
You can make a single app (single .APK file) to run from: 4" screen with limited set of buttons/text to 10" screen which is rich with big buttons/text and to 24" screen with small buttons/text/other tools, all of this with adding a single XML file and nothing more!

Chrome OS will be folded into android, not the other way around. I wouldn't think mobile users will even be affected much but we'll see

Parag007, 30 Oct 2015End of Android in 2017!!!!!!Yup. There goes android. The future of OS as claimed by Google, no more android by 2017. I hope all our phone and tablet can be updated to ChromeDroid by then. Android N may be the last android ever created. Next thing we know a few years later Google wants to merge its new OS with Windows. A few years after that it merge with IOS. In the end all the OS in the world finally become one and united. No more android/ios/windows war.

                            Don't think so.

In late 80's and early 90's IBM was "evil" and MS was "good guy".

Guess , what happened ? IBM lose.

But years after , now we want to be free from MS.

In 2022 you will need freedom from Google.

Because Android is only "open source" , but not open, in fact Android is is closed, with full of bloatware and restrictions.
And Google doesn't seems to worried about that, because he is producer many of that bloatware.

You will miss many things, you used to have.

                            And that will happen.

Because, people like Google as much as they liked MS once.

Going from one corporation (MS) to another corporation (Google) in search from freedom is nonetheless.

You want alternative , go for Linux.

Days , when you needed to use the terminal for everything has gone.Modern Linux distros are useful for average consumer.

Make it free and I'm sold.

Also, Google should use this as a chance to keep the OEMs under their leash. Make them install few apps, few UI changes from OEM to OEM and unify the Android (ChromeDroid? Droidome?). That would kill Windows Mobile and iOS.

Just imagine a Samsung Galaxy S8 with stock ChromeDroid and some apps by Samsung? :)

I've only read rumours about this. Now the CEO of Google has confirmed this. All thanks to data-analyzers realising that a unified Windows 10 across devices is gonna break the market as we know it. All said and done, this should see the demise of AOSP and its derivative forks like the Amazon FireOS and the more popular Cyanogenmod. I'm wondering if these Android users wouldn't rather switch to the unified Windows? My bet is they'll move on to Apple, until Apple decides to merge iOS and MacOS.
