US smartphone market study predicts a good year for Android

People people people, you are getting things mixed up. Nokia's smartphone marketshare is calculated SEPARATELY from their dumbphone marketshare. Nokia sold 78 million smartphones last year, this is smartphones no dumbphones are included. That 78 million is 40% of the total smartphone market, so they sell 40% of all smartphones sold worldwide. Nokia sold a total of 460+ million phones last year, this is smartphones PLUS dumbphones. This is 38% of ALL PHONES (dumbphones and smartphones combined) sold in the world.
So there you have it: nokia controls 40% of the smartphone market.
Nokia controls 38% of the TOTAL mobile phone(smartphones + dumbphones) market.

And if you compare S60v5 phones on Nokia Only against Iphones, Symbian is still in the lead.
3G does not mean having a touch screen, A 3G phone is one using UMTS or HSPA transmissions instead of GSM. They did not release a touch phones for some time because there were comfortable enough with their star at that time the N95.

The almighty brand owns over 50%+ of market share among all segments? If you ever read the news here regarding financial reports from the almighty brand, the figures top at 40% (actually a bit less), so the figures you quoted may apply where you live, but doubtfully worldwide. (maybe over 70% in Europe, but definitely less than 20% in US and Japan and Korea)
Now you want to compare sales of ALL S60v5 touchscreen phones from ALL the brands to iphone? Why not simply from any single brand? Why not just the almighty brand? Why the almighty brand REFUSED to release any touchscreen (3G) phones (don't tell me about 7700/7710, as I have never seen anyone using any of them) before iphones, if touchscreen is not the trend?

Nokia and Symbian? Ha.
They can't compete with Android. Are they really going to compete with Google search, Google Voice, Android Market, Google Maps, Google Earth, GMail, etc. all integrated into the OS? That's what an Android device gives you.
Symbian powered Nokia's give you the Ovi Store and a Navteq map that until very recently you had to pay for. They aren't going to get very far.
Competing with Android means competing with Google. Is Nokia really up for that?

Symbian's not dead but it is dying. The iPhone, Blackberries and Android will slowly eat Nokia/Symbian's market share elsewhere in the world, like they have in the US. Nokia will still be making lots of phones to be sure, but they just won't be that important when it comes to high-end smartphones. They'll be the king of dumbphones and low end smartphones (like the 5800 XM) in the future. They'll be the brand of choice in developing countries, while the developed world moves on to iPhones, Blackberries and Android.

Either way Nokia owns 50%+ market share on smart phones and also 50%+ market share on all cell phones. (basic, feature and smart)
Also you cannot compare Nokia 5800 with Iphone which costs 3 times more. Apple has only 3 phones out of which now only the 3Gs is common. Sure the Iphone sales is above the 5800 but if you compare the number of S60v5 (touch Symbian) phones against the Iphone OS phones sold, Symbian is in the lead. (these include 5800, N97, 5530, 5230, Satio, Vivaz, and that Samsung)

Default OS language: Chinese but CANNOT be CHANGED back to English. View Chinese websites / characters being ok.
After upgrade to English OS, it CANNOT be changed back to Chinese, and I CANNOT view Chinese websites / characters.
Such was "not" a problem on WM6.0.
Can you tell me if WM7 has improved the problem I encountered? If not (due to licensing problem), I'll stick with my Android based Milestone, which is much much faster and easier to operate than the WM6.1 based A3100.
And if WM doesn't improve anytime soon, nobody will go back to WM.

Anonymous, 21 Mar 2010You think the Blackberry is expensive because you paid too ... moreWell, it doesn't really matter what the BB 9700 costs today cause it's 6 months later, cause the E72 costs 250 unlocked euros today where i live.
When BB 9700 was released i looked everywhere on the web, even in Canada to order it, and nowhere was it under 600 dollars.
Today it's a "old" phone, that's why the price went down, so did E72.
The difference is that Nokia E72 cost around 350 Euros when it was released, not 6 months later.
Anyway, the 9700 is goos at the basic stuff but the E72 still beats the living daylights out of it like i said before. So i was gonna change to Nokia, but they haven't announced anything new yet, so i goin Android.

Here's the problem for most people. They like Nokia, but Symbian has fallen behind. Just imagine what Nokia would accomplish if they built Android handsets.

I am not from the US. And you are obviously not knowledgeable if you think all Nokias are sold around the world unlocked. With the exception of a few countries, Nokias are sold locked when they are sold on contract.
