19 March, 2010
They say you shouldn't count your chickens before they hatch, but according to a market survey Android has laid a lot of eggs in North America. The total number of smartphone shipments will rise by 38%...

Nokia has issues. Instead of trying to improve on their Symbian OS, they go and make another OS with Intel and flood the market with more useless OSes. Why not just dump their Symbians and Meegos and just make Android handsets? They would probably make lotsa profit that way, instead of wasting so much time making new OSes.

David, 20 Mar 2010I have a Blackberry 9700 now and it is a very good phone. ... moreYou think the Blackberry is expensive because you paid too much for it. In North America, Blackberries are cheap. For example, Wind Mobile in Canada sells the Bold 9700 without contract for CAD 450, which is about 327 Euros or about 370 Euros with tax. At that price a Blackberry Bold 9700 would be about the same price as your brother's Nokia E72, give or take 30 Euros.

You wouldn't think the Bold was not worthwhile if you had paid 370 Euros for it. And on contract, here in Canada, the Bold 9700 goes for $150 or about 109 Euros. That should help people understand why Blackberries are so popular over here. That and BBM, of course.

This survey is not about the rest of the world. It is about the US. In the US, Symbian is dead. Nokia fans keep talking about looking for apps on the internet. North Americans prefer app stores to get apps. They aren't going to go surfing the net for them. That's just reality.

With the Ovi store being as craptastic as it is, why would it be a surprise that Ovi and Nokia is dying in North America. And it will follow internationally as well. Just look at how many companies plan on developing in each OS. 6 companies for Android, 3 for Symbian. Why would any company sign on to develop for an OS that favours one manufacturer (Nokia)?

2010 is the year of Android.

...and this is coming from a Nokia 5800xm user, who'll soon be switching to a Nexus One.

No phone in the world would be able to without these technology,
Therefore whoever makes smartphone will have to pay nokia for the use of those technology, apple also will have to pay up that $1.5 billion that they owes nokia for the use of those technology that apple use to make the iphone works.

Why wait for that same old... moreNokia won't die, oh hell no, not gonna happen in your lifetime. this is the thinking of the American market. Android is not doing too well in Europe, and the fact that Google is pulling out of the most important market in the developing world, China, will hurt them even more.

Nokia won't die for the simple fact, that the population out there that aren't tech savvy will take the "safe" option, which to them will be to upgrade to the new product they are semi-familiar with... Nokia. Android is insanely over hyped by everyone who hates iPhones, it is actually really unstable and has a long way to go before it is a good product. Copying a couple of UI traits from other companies doesn't make it good. I think Apple's results will depend on the next iPhone, I think even they know it's time for a major revamp. The excellent OS, store etc just isn't enough this time and some of the Apps need updating ie iPod, Photos etc. WM7 looks to have a lovely layout for media, which Apple will most likely see as direct competition. I think WM7 might struggle at first with it's lack of feature so it will be interesting to see whether all these predictions stack up. I honestly can't see android jumping that far. Although, Rims figures in this are not reflected in the rest of the world...

Right now, the Android Market is already rising fast with thousands of Applications and games available. And it's been only a few years. Tablet computers are even already using Android too.

                              Math for RIM sales
Shipments in 2009 were 23.2 million units.
Forecast for 2010 is 28 million units.
                              28-23.2=4.8 million units increase
                              Quote from article:
They lose 6.2% market share but due to the increase in total smartphones shipped, they will still get a 5.8 million increase in units shipped.

Still think Symbian is Dead? The drop was due to Nokia lagging behind to modernize their UI. There was nothing wrong with the stability and performance of Symbian and is still one of the most flexible and powerful OS out there.
Now with the introduction of Symbian^3 and Symbian^4, their sales will start to sky rocket once again because of one simple advantage that Nokia offers that no other manufacturer can. - Value for Money

The 5800 is one very good example. Costing 1/3 of the Iphone, It delivers much more than the Iphone can in terms of feature.

User expectation for wp7 is in peak. And it will be graet OS with new UI and new features with today's demand

At this rate Android will take over WinMo by 2010(before Windows Phone 7 Series is out), Symbian will become truly open source, and iPhone will only sell if their phones' specs can match the competition
