Samsung buys components from other compan... moreyes, apple might buy the sensors from sony, but the optics are not, they do the brain stuff they design how to make it better, tweak the image processing unit, and image algorithm..that explains why other phones use exactly the same sony sensors as apple are using but cant produce the output of the image quality as apple do with their iphones.. the conclusion is Apple IS not 100% relied on other suppliers, they designed and demand how those things should work harmony together

The camera component that wasn't theirs was the sony sensor in the samsung galaxy s3 and s4 but now samsung are using their own made "Isocell from their S5 onwards"!
Samsung are more than capable to produce a large scale of components, that's why samsung basically made the whole of the previous iphone in the pass it most of it's components whilst supplying other companies with parts for their devices. e.g. let's say meizu using samsungs exynos cpu in their meizu pro 5....

Samsung buys components from other companies.. not because they cannot make components themselves, but because other companies have bigger production scale and therefore can make same component cheaper e.g. Samsung's ISOCELL camera sensor is superior to SONY IPX204, but to produce it is probably 10 times less expensive, while performance is just little bit worse. On another hand Apple buys 100% components from the dodgiest China manufactures or China subcontractors of Samsung, Hitachi, Toshiba, Sony... not only because it is cheaper, but because Apple is not even "technology company"... they do not have capacities to design and obviously to produce parts... they strength is only they marketing and brand name... Apple is really - NOTHING.. empty thing with brand logo on top... if for whatever reason suppliers would decide not to supply Apple (I know.. highly unlikely..) there will be no Apple.

j... moreNo proof. The real proof is that two more of that patents Apple asserted in the trial have been invalidated. Most of Apple's patents on the iPhone are either obvious, not new or just plain stolen.
Further proof of Apple's theft is the still standing judgement in the US that they not only violated Samsung's FRAND patents, but engaged in a reverse holdup with the intention of never paying for them.

j... moreif the lawsuit proved anything, it's that Apple patents are nothing but a chock full of horse manure. Most of their patents are now invalidated and almost all non-US courts were wise enough to call out Apple's fake patents and invalidate them.
But in the US, Samsung has to pay for patents that are invalidated by the USPTO. This is only possible in Apple's hometown court.

Anonymous, 06 Dec 2015well, the judgement was made in the us, so the decision wou... moreand Apple pretty much lost their patent claims on all neutral juridiction -- which forced Apple to drop all non-US lawsuits a while back. The South Korean court gave a divided ruling, while the US gave apparently very lopsided decision in favor of their domestic company. Even Obama joined the fray by reversing a decision that favored Samsung a couple of years back. It couldn't have been worse.

You guys laughed too early. The judgement have not been made yet. Samsung merely state that they will complete the payment but in one condition. Samsung reserved all the rights for reimbirsement. Meaning, if the judgement is reversed or overturned, Apple will be the one who have to compensate Samsung the $548million amount or partial of the amount. Now, Samsung can laugh.
