Anonymous, 08 Apr 2010Here is a link, as you can see total phones sales Nokia dom... moresame old stats....

whenever the almighty brand "claims" it captures x% of "smartphone" market share, does that mean most of its users are really utilizing the "smart" features? (i.e. download software and stuff)

I doubt so, as even years ago when I observed some users of N73, all they cared was the quality of the cam, then they wrote to newspaper and complained the phone often hanged....as they thought simply pressing the END key would end all programs.

On the other hand, most (if not all) iphone users really utilize the "smart" features of the phone...as I don't know anyone who has 0 apps on their iphones.

Anonymous, 08 Apr 2010Here is a link, as you can see total phones sales Nokia dom... moreSure but the same Gartner also says this :

After more than doubling its total sales from a year prior, the iPhone platform was catapulted into third place in global smartphone sales in 2009, with Apple shipping 24.9 million handsets.
The big gainers in 2009 were Apple, Google and RIM, which all saw significant increases in their market share. In 2008, Apple commanded just 8.2 percent of the market with 11.4 million units sold. But the company's share grew 6.2 percent in 2009, giving it the largest increase of any handset maker.

Apple was helped by a strong finish in 2009. In the last quarter alone, the company sold a record 8.7 million iPhones, representing 100 percent growth over the year-ago quarter.

Losing ground in 2009 was Nokia, which saw its Symbian platform drop from 52.4 percent a year prior to 46.9 percent.

You see , Apple is gonna achieve in like 5 years time what took Nokia 15 years...

Thank God, the new OS has been revealed and it WON'T have video calling. It will have touch zoom for the video cam, 5x digital zoom (urgh) and be faster.

          Oh, and multitasking :)

            Tsk tsk... Fanboys again..

Whats the point proving one is better than the other? It aint gonna prove anything other than you being fanboys of businessmen...

Their main objective is to earn cash, and apple is doing a darn good job. Sapping people's cash away on slabs of silicon that 'falls' out of trend every year or so.

Nokia earns from those who actually want a phone, not a trend or a 'cool' thing to have. And there are way more of those people. You have to admit, apple are sore losers. Suing anyone they think who is invading their ''turf''. Like what they did to htc and nokia. In the end its all bout profits and nothing more. So keep on arguing then fanboys, especially you core, go on and say apple rocks and all that bull. ^^

Here is a link, as you can see total phones sales Nokia dominated with 36% (Apple did not even make top 5) but in total Smartphone sales, Symbian dominates with 47% while apple runs at only 14%. This is the 2009 status.

Bill, 08 Apr 2010My mistake, 1 Billion for each country*Exactly, no matter how much we argue here, the number of Apple users are like a drop of water in a lake when compared to the number of Nokia users. Now with the coming of Symbian^3 which combines the power of S60v5 OS with some awesome new looks, apple will loose its only advantage over Nokia (the good looking UI).
I also have to mention that these apple fan in those 1st world countries think that all the Nokia's in Asia and Africa etc. are non-smartphones and that we have no technologies like 3.5G or WiFi. This is very incorrect, almost 1 in every 3 Nokia phones I see here in Sri Lanka is a Smartphone. The situation is similar in India as well. Also Asian countries do have new technologies like 3.5G.
Remember, almost all your smartphones, specially those Iphones, are made here in Asia.

Only the geeks here in the UK or Europe have heard of Android, the casual consumer, ie, 90% of the population haven't even heard of Android so proof that it's only popular with the Americans. Sad really, I like Android too, it has much potential but I doubt this will be popular with one of the most important markets in the world, China considering the spat with Google. A loss for the latter, not the former seeing as the rise of the Asian giant will benefit Android's growth. Plus in India, the other important Asian Giant, Nokia is the ONLY brand they know, even if it's Samsung or SE, the locals will refer to it as Nokia. In China and India, it's Nokia, not Apple. Plus with 2 billion people for each country, who are you to aergue with them?

HTC are what Nokia were 10 years ago, with the exception that they aren't the world's largest phone manufacturer. Yes, Nokia is busy with Symbian 3/4 but we have heard VERY VERY little from them this year. MeeGo/Maemo 6 or Symbian 3, whatever, I am or was a very loyal Nokia fan but I'm not seeing anything distinctive or fresh from them or from anyone else. Not saying Apple will reinvent the game too, they've got the buzz and that's about it. Very boring year for fans of the smartphone or dumbphone, few releases and only three devices worth mentioning, those being HTC devices. The Desire, Evo 4G and Legend. Don't hold your breath for Windows Phone 7, a completely sucky year for phones.

Apple only leads the markets in those areas. Everywhere else in the world, where a bulk of mobiles are used, such as Asia, Africa, including major markets like India, China and Middle east, Nokia is WAY WAY in the lead. Both in Smartphone sales and total phone sales no other company can catch it, least not Apple. In these areas, even companies like S.E. Samsung and LG are very much ahead of Apple.

Nokia need to wake up to the current phone market and work on a decent multi media unit that is also a phone, as apposed to trying to make a phone into a multi media unit. If they can get the basics right they might start to get some of their market share back.
Apple on the other hand are clever in the way they make their4 products and as for nicking other companys ideas, lets face it they all do it. Apple are currenly leading the market with quality products that are reliable and customer friendly and every other manufacturer is tyring to keep up.....
