Samsung and LG won't be making the leap to 4K displays in 2016

Just stick with a 720p resolution
And try to improve it
Rather than just increasing the resolution

3 nity, 18 Dec 2015Just because only Sony who have a trick how to manage their... moreThe 1080 screen trick on the Z5 premium is basic. It still uses all pixels.
4K is the width of 1080p x2 and the height x2. That way, a pretty simple upscaling process can upscale an 1080p image/element to 4K, without needing too much resources.
In games you can already set resolution. But for example setting the resolution to 720p if you have a 1080p screen, will actually need more resources in the scaling than from 1080p to 4K.
This is something Samsung and LG can easily do.
And I suspect that the Z5 premium will have more things running at 4K, ones it gets an Android version that has support for that.

Secondly.
Do we need higher resolution?
The question, if you see pixels, does not tell the full story. So those that come to the conclusion, that if you can't see pixels on a certain distance you dont need higher DPI, are only partly right.
Well, with current display technologies, we have subpixels. Subpixels create a noise, it is one of the things that effects if a completely colored field on the screen will look spotted or not.
By making those pixels smaller (thus even smaller sub-pixels), the noise will be less visual.
So there are benefits in having higher DPI, than you need just to go beyond the limit where you see or dont see pixels. (unless some company could come up wit a solution, that is not based on subpixels, where the actual pixel itself could change color, then that DPI theroy would be more relevant).
The other thing that effects how spotty a field on the screen will look, is the distance between pixes/subpixels. This is not effected by resolution. However the 4K screen on the Sony Z5 Premium has smaller distance between pixels than I've seen on other devices.
And then there is VR.
Personally I would rather have a separate device for that, if only the cost for those were reasonble. (or rather a separate screen unit, the processing and such, could very well be carried out by a smartphone, tablet or computer, and then sent via wire or wireless).
But if you use a smartphone screen as the VR screen, QHD is not enough to avoid having a pixelated image. I cant speak for the 4K screen of the Z5 Premium, as I have not seen that in a VR setup.
But do you NEED higer dpi?
My Z3 can render text at a size that makes it hard to see at a normal viewing distance. That means I dont have to zoom to see max amount of text for the display (webpages, Word processing, spreadsheets, and so on). So in that regard, the display does what I need it to do.
I can live with spotty fields of colour. It's not a deal-breaker.
VR looks pixelated, but as it is now, there isnt much I would use it for, where image quality is that important. (But I would love to have a device with a 1080p monitor for each eye for 3D blu-ray, but my phone has no HDMI input, so I could not use that as such a screen even if it had enough resolution).
So in my case, the answer is NO, to weather I NEED or not. However, that does not mean that I don't want the resolution to increase so that I will get better image on my devices. So I see no reason, why makers should stop at QHD or FHD, but I could understand if LG and Smasung wont put it in their mainstream device of the year for 2016, but I would like them to make displays at least, even if they are separate units that are not put in to a device, or only put in nisch devices.

Firstly.
Just to clearify, if you dont play games, higher resolution, wont effect battery as much as people think.
The GPU does not have to work that hard for just the UI.
If you watch 4K videos instead of 1080p videos, that will have an effect.
And the actual pixel-switching, would just have a tiny tiny effect. The difference in power usage, for the pixel-switching, is less than, the difference between panels from different makers/generations (with the same base tech, LCD / Oled respectively).
With LCD panels, the backlight effects the battery more, and that is effected by size and tech, and not resolution.
With OLED the power consumption of the smaller pixels, compensates for the resolution increase.
So backlight is a bigger issue than the resolution. Usually technology improves in parrallel, so makers, wont have to focus on either, but can make improvements on both fronts.
Things like using polarizing filters, so the backlight wont have to be as strong, for a phone to work outside, is one way, to reduce power consumption. Nokia/MS uses such tech, but probably others as well.
The other thing to remember, is that people confuse screen-on time, with power draw of the screen.
When the screen is on, more processes will be going on in the background. Some just, to display the interface.
But the biggest effect will come from the actual usage, the things that you do, that initiate processes.
All those processes going on, can also be made more power efficient, and thus effect the screen-on time, even for a device with the exact same screen, and the same battery capacity.
So the resolution itself wont be the thing that ruins your batterylife (unless you play games).

Just because only Sony who have a trick how to manage their battery backup on their smartphones. And just bacause only Sony who have a technology to manage how their 4K screen panel to render using only 1080 resolution on their Z5 Premium if it is not used when not needed. And... I heard that Samsung is developing a panel with 10K resolution for their smartphones where the battery will be run out within an hour. :D

JOJO, 18 Dec 20154K is not even visible for the human eye. It's a marketing ... moreThere is also no visible difference between FHD(1080) and 2K(1440p) and nobody criticize those manufacturers yet people dare to criticize that there is no visible difference between FHD(1080p) and 4K (2160p) yet they complain about regular Z5 because it's just 1080p FHD.
GET REAL!!!
If you need higher resolution than ''just'' FHD(1080p) than only 4K(2160p) makes sense more than 2K(1440p) so you could actually spot some difference.... right?
USE LOGIC!!!
You have 4K recording on the phone for god's sake! So it is logical being able to view that 4K content in native resolution.
YOU HAVE CHOICE!!!
You are not forced to buy premium with 4K display there is also Z5 version with FHD so you can make a choice.
ADVICE:
People stop trolling and come to fuc*ing senses !

up until now they didn't give a shit about ''power efficiency'' doing just the opposite increasing screen resolution and downgrading the battery capacity ... but now when SONY released first 4K display in a phone they decided to go other way around?
Can't they be just honest and say we are not SONY and we can't make it until the end of the year so you will have to wait a bit longer for us to catch up. nah... imagine then how mad all their fanboys would be :D

Quite a few reports and review as well showed poor performance of Z5 premium in many aspects. Few to mention, brightness of display, colour details and finally pixel-to-grid ratio. 4k on smartphone is more of marketing gimmick for now rather than advantage. Samsungs QHD proven to be one of the best displays on the market with multiple review praising them for quality and efficiency. Final nail in the coffin.. Z5 itself normally runs on 1080p and only in certain circumstances switches to real 4K. This just highlights content limitations and high impact to battery life.

Battery life matters to all, except the iphone tools, who are the itools? phone users who are more like an accessory to their phone, rather than using it. an accessory that simply carries it around and moderates his life in order to serve it, rather that moderate it, to serve his life.
for example, an itool prefers hit phone to be thin, rather than having decent battery capacity and therefore he accomodates his life to serve the reduced capacity of his master-phone.
The normal ppl, who like to use their mobile and dont be used by them, treat them like pets, attend their needs, but always feel uncomfortable by their daily need routine.
They dont hesitate to use gps, play a couple of games in the metro, have a lot of apps like, fb mess, hangout, viber and whatsup running in the background, receive and send mails and texts, accept and make calls, day and night, use agendas with notifications, active widgets , embedded radio and mp3 player, constant browsing for news, actualisation and constant access to all sorts of information. And to do all that, the user needs his tool to be having the proper ammount of battery capacity to handle his day, his every day, both the ones that only require 2-4hours screen time and the ones who require 5-8! there got to be a tool for and not everybody is willing to be a tool...

For those that can see pixels on 1K screens it's probably an Amoled Samsung panel. These are usually pentile displays which halve the resolution. This is because each pixel only has 2 sub pixels - but always a green like this: GR GB GR GB etc. So, to make a white pixel you need an adjacent pixel for the missing sub pixel. If you think about you will always need a neighbouring pixel to make all the colours unless a pure colour.
These panels are the biggest con going and only at 2K plus won't you see the dots. I'm using a Sony Xperia Z Ultra with a 1K display and you can't see the dots and it has a 6.4" screen !!

Anonymous, 17 Dec 2015Because people operate their lives on a 24 hour cycle. Thus... moreWell, it may be true that the individual need not have a longer-lasting battery - it helps with their daily cycle/instincts. That's nice and convenient.
But think on a global scale: if 500 million people with smartphones needed to charge their phones every single night, what would that spell a lot more demand for electricity (renewable energy is not that cheap in developing countries - which have a lot of phones, too). While it may not be comparable to cars, do remember that small things also add up And with the climate change phenomena around us (and whatever convention happened in Paris) I doubt that they can keep something as environmentally unsound as one-day battery mentality.

I doubt Korea phone maker fail to manage the battery comsumption for the 4K screen, they only could pump up the battery size. The pixels arrangement of the Oled screen also cant use the switching method between 1080 and 4K.

Anonymous, 17 Dec 2015Battery life is essential if you travel a lot, and if you a... moreBecause people operate their lives on a 24 hour cycle. Thus it will always be simpler and easier to plug your phone in every night when going to bed rather than thinking about it and charging it every 3 days or something. Id say for 99% of users 99% of the time they will be able to simply charge it like that.
My galaxy s5 used to last me 2 or even 3 days for example, so charging it wasn't a high priority. that's why I sometimes forgot to charge it and ended some days with less than 10%.
If I plugged it in every night like normal I wouldn't have to worry about that, but if I plugged it in every night what's the point in having good battery except when I'm travelling? Now you've already limited the people who care to a minority, meaning making sacrifices elsewhere to improve battery is mainly a negative thing at this point. Thus battery over a day is overrated. There are ways to improve your battery more than lower resolution would anyway, like a battery case or power saving mode.

For me the main issue is of 4k data for 4k display. It requires huge amount of space if we store it and high speed conmection if we stream it.
