MeeGo features explained, Atom CPU gets compatible with Android

14 April, 2010
We are still several months away from seeing an actual mobile phone running the MeeGo OS, but its features just became a bit less of an enigma. The platform that Nokia and Intel jointly developed will come with...

Barcode, 14 Apr 2010lol I have the N900 and the Droid and I prefer Maemo over A... moreI agree with you!

And android is just some twisted linux that lost all it's compatibility because they weren't sure it will have success so they didn't invest the money linux optimization and on hardware able to support full linux.

It's like taking maemo, stripping it out of all its functionality and cross platform compatibility and selling it on cheap devices...

So why would I want a diluted smartphone experience when I can have desktop experience on my N900.

I am not saying Android is bad because its not at all but when I look at the browser and the layout and customization of Maemo I feel Android has some catching up to do. But not everyone sees my opinion obviously but hey its just my take on it.

LG just joined today, GSMArena is a little outdated, but there's news of the world's most famous vendors on the linux site dating back since last month, every third day somebody is joining!

        It's Crazy!

I mean Nokia released ONE device, and BAM! If this is not instant success I don't know what is.

Anonymous, 14 Apr 2010I agree with the some of the comments below. I too had the ... moreIf we're to mention huge number of supporters that joined instantly to this project: Intel, Acer, Amino, Asianux, Asus, BMW Group, Collabora, Ltd., CS2C, DeviceVM, EA Mobile, Gameloft, Hancom, Linpus, Maemo Community Council, Mandriva, Metasys, Miracle, MontaVista Software, Novell, PixArt, Red Flag, ST-Ericsson, Tencent, TurboLinux, VietSoftware, Wind River, WTEC, etc, etc

this series of devices are likely to set the first standard of communication and multimedia in history!

The thing with maemo it that it has thousands of applications available to be ported and the community isn't staying' there for nothing.

Also, developers are paid. They don't get paid at all when they're competing with the amount of freeware linux has to offer. That's that.

Linux was designed to be free and if you're to count the computers using it world-wide you'll see microsoft shaking in their boots;)

The browser has portrait mode, the phone app has portrait mode and most apps that need it.

Don't tell me you play games watch photos and movies in portrait mode; not to mention browsing.

As for Maemo/meego it's the same linux, only re branded so intel gets some attention.

I agree with the some of the comments below. I too had the n900 and it had some good features, but it had many more bad ones. The hardware was great, reception, camera, screen, etc were what you would expect from a high end nokia. However, the software was a different story. Before I sold mine, it had a total of only 250 apps !! LOL , While the community were great in trying to develop solutions, it was so small that it would take 10yrs to get the same apps as a currently avaiable for android phones, and maybe 100 yrs to get something close to what the iphone users have. The OS was rushed too early and very unpolished, no portrait mode, no mms (even though its obsolete, many folks still use it), no USSD funtionanlity. And forget about the included ovi maps, it likes a 2005 application that they ported to 2010. But it doesn't matter anymore, because Maego is dying very quickly and Meego is probably going to suffer the same fate. My recommendation to anyone who is considering buying this phone -- Don't. Get an Android phone or regular nokia symbian.

                  Hi guys,
I still use N900 and fortunately I'll be shipping my phone to the new buyer in 1 or 2 days. It pissed me off. Why?
                  Check the reasons:
                  1. The battery drains me so quickly that I normally switch the phone to GSM mode while being out of home. That means I barely use the internet out of home.

                  2. Skype is preinstalled with this phone. That's very good. But every single time I call back home in Bangladesh on their Skype account, I go mad. In every 20/30 secs, I hear no sound from them for another 10/15 secs. I contacted the Skype team and after following so many steps they advised me, it didn't work. I even upgraded the firmware to the latest version, but no way..

                  3. The menus don't work in vertical mode except the call function. It really is boring while you r on the go.

                  4. In the Ovi maps, you can't write any number like a postcode as your destination. It just doesn't let you write numbers, at least in my one.

                  5. There are only countable applications for this phone. You can't get any necessary applications you want as you can in the case of iPhone.

So I am just pissed off with this one. Though good music, video, flash support are few things to be mentioned. But at the end of the day, you need some battery left to do all these things. If your battery is empty, all these don't matter. Also just to use skype, I don't want to bear another phone from 3 with me all the time.

Nokia and Intel stated MeeGo for the N900 wasn't completely ignored. They're still debating whether or not it would happen, and last I checked, they were leaning toward porting it.

There will be only on Meego device released because it has failed before its released. No one cares about maemo/meego and if it doesn't sell why make more units of it ?
