Anyway, whatever it has in the end has to drive the same headphones with wires and magnets in them. Knowing Apple, the headphones will be made by Beats and have too much bass and cardboard-box-like sound but decent sensitivity and volume. But some people here obviously believe that Apple can somehow do better than Sennheiser and company and decades of their experience. The same kind of people buys gold-plated silver speaker cables for "better sound". To each their own. I just came to laugh at your floppy... Nevermind. :-)

The first iMac dropped the floppy dick drive. Remember those? People moved on.
The first MacBook Air dropped the CD/DVD drive. People moved on.
The iPhone 5 switched the old 30 pin charger for the new Lightning port. People got used to it, and now Lightning cables are everywhere.
The new MacBook has dropped every port (including Apple's proprietary MagSafe charging port) in favor of the latest USB Type-C. People will adjust!

Anyway, the new headphones will offer digital audio quality, rather than analog. So for music aficionados this will be a huge improvement.

Anonymous, 05 Jan 2016There already is another standard, it's called Bluetooth. ... morewhatever we say you ifans will not change your decision as if a mind chip installed in your head when you were young. so if you plan to purchase ip7 better go with the lightning one. Bluetooth is really worst even in a car. it is good for calls but for music I hate it.

Anonymous, 05 Jan 2016There already is another standard, it's called Bluetooth. ... moreYes, BT headphones are still a minority. And as they cost more, use more power and generally give lower quality (most sets that can work via BT or a cable sound better via the cable, though there are honourable exceptions) that's a retrograde move for most people - especially those who already own decent headphones which will no longer work.

So let's hope this is just a rumour.

Anonymous, 05 Jan 2016There already is another standard, it's called Bluetooth. ... moreAlthough we're on the same page on the thought process here, Bluetooth cannot be considered as a viable alternative ATM to a standard class of wired headphones. You need to look at the demographic here. Not everyone has access to wireless headphone inventory and even ones who do, have a limited and rather expensive supply. Furthermore, the "bundled" headphones that have been provided by Apple for years are now going to become obsolete save for spending extra greens on adapters. Not to mention all the low/mid/high end dedicated headphones that folks bought to bang their fav tunes out of their apple device, will now be rendered helpless and in need of that obligatory adapter.

I for one have access to wireless headphones and do actually use setup once in a while, but IMO right now I'd still prefer wired anyday. This looks nothing more to me than yet another low ball play by Apple to milk more money.

News said Samsung is improving it sound quality by integrating ESS Technology audio chip and turning it into HiFi powerhouse. With 129db signal to noise ratio, imagine that with an earphone or headset. Not only that, it use less power too. Though, if Samsung is trying to sell their Samsung Gear Circle or Samsung Level headphone then, the earjack definitely be gone in a few years. Afterall, no one goes wireless as good as Samsung. When will Apple adapt wireless charging?

i have been seeing reports saying that apple might not be posting record breaking sales with the iphone 7. im a little worried that if they go through with this that that might actually happen, but given the people who can buy apple products (mostly the wealthy) i could definitely see Bluetooth and lighting audio becoming the norm, simply because they can go out and just buy the necessary adapters. Coming from an android users POV...

This would be a pretty big mistake. As some who owns high end headphones I wouldn't even consider an iphone if they did this. And no, bluetooth is NOT a good solution for headphones. Its great for car and home audio, but I don't want to have to charge headphones, and I certainly don't want to replace my beyerdynamic dt 770s with some low quality apple solution.

Why its always Apple haters who has biggest thing to say about what Apple does? I mean 134 comments already and most of them are for sure from Apple haters. Why would they care about this at all? Same happened with lightning port and now after years android users finally are able to use better connector than all these years, and sametime we have enjoyed lighting port, and now we can enjoy better audio quality, maybe you android guys get same after few Years ;)
