I'm a runner and have been using Bluetooth ear buds for years because I find it easier to move when my ears aren't tethered to the phone. The Sony SBH20 is great and is about $20 on Amazon right now. You can clip it to your waistband and plug any headphones into it. I've had it 2 years and the thing is bombproof. Weights have smashed it, dog chewed it, it's been rained on, etc.
It sucks Apple is doing this but there are some great accessories out there that will lessen the pain.

Duel, 05 Jan 2016It would also need adapter so what's the point? piss of the... morewell people used to say same for lighting port. was that not worth? look at world they are now coming up with same idea "reversable port" naming it usb-c. same will be with the audio jack, and next thing you know that you could listen audio via usb-c 2.0!

If thickness was the problem they could implement de 2.5 jack (a return to the nokia era), and there are tons of adapters from 3.5 to 2.5. But of course that is not the case. they are interested in money and profit alone.

The Vivo X5 max is the thinnest phone in the world at 5.1mm and does have a 3.5mm jack, if the iPhone 7 is 5.5mm or thicker and doesn't have it I will be severely dissapointed.

I think a lot of it is down to Johnny Ive having too much say in things and, of course, Steve Jobs no longer being around. Ive can certainly design attractive hardware (iPhone 6/6s aside, IMO) but doesn't seem to have a grip on making things practical from an engineering perspective.
Will the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack make users flock away? Unlikely. Some, probably, who will probably just upgrade to a 6s rather than a 7. Apple will likely have to bundle in some compatible headphones, or an adaptor but I'd imagine an adaptor solution will be fragile and look pretty damn ugly for a brand based on fashion. Then again, with the baby bump battery pack I'm not sure they care too much at this point.

They even use it as a major selling point... When the device needs to be on a single spot on a certain dock for it to charge? LMAO Riiight in that case my Apple watch is wireless too lol

I wouldn't be surprised even with lighning connector gone. Everything is going wireless. You can have also wireless docking just in case(similar like with L950XL). Well, there is no need to be first in this field, but without someone eager do that, it won't come anytime soon. It still matter how they do that, f.ex. when samsung banned sd-slots he should offer similar freedom with memory- either make it upgradable or start with at least double storage.
