I disagree with your premise though and here's why. This didn't "just happen" to HTC. They are where they are because of the decisions they've made. And they should be called out on those poor decisions so they learn from their mistakes and hopefully stay in business.
When your customers complain about not wanting a 4 megapixel camera and then you go and do it a second year in a row - it's a problem.
When you replace that 4 megapixel camera with an even worse camera (M9) - it's a problem.
When your chipset and battery life in your 2015 flagship is worse than your 2014 flagship - it's a problem.
When you take what little money you have for advertising and use it on terrible campaigns featuring otherwise talented actors - it's a problem.
When you release a phone for $400, then a month later you raise the price to $500 - it's a problem.

A few years back, a high percentage of people were using HTC, more than Apple and Samsung. Bashing HTC now where it's not running very well, is just shit. Every company can get in a situation like this.
I hope HTC find their way back to success.

AnonD-77892, 08 Jan 2016ahahaha... I hate this wannabe brand! A brand that will nev... moreI don't think you can really call HTC a wannabe brand.. They were making smartphones long before Apple or Samsung and used to make some of best you could buy. They have definitely list their way though.. First too many phones which confused people, then no real progression from their top models year on year. Now they seem to be trying flood the market with a thousand and one variations of their One series and an even more confusing line up of lower models. It's like they never learn. Badly managed? Yes. A wannabe though? Definitely not.

AnonD-127662, 08 Jan 2016Some of the comments here are laughable. HTC being a Samsun... moreAnother problem here is that by many metrics the HTC One M8 released in 2014 is a better device than the M9 or A9. Why would anyone downgrade or sidegrade? Of course sales are down.

bals, 08 Jan 2016Chinese brand phones have a great quality of specs....
but... moreYeah, but many chinese manufacturers don't give a damn about paying for patents. I dont think Xiaomi or Oneplus even care about paying patent royalties.
On the other hand manufacturers like Samsung and LG take advantage of using their own parts (displays, memory, CPU).
Look at margins - only apple is able to produce a solid margin. Even Samsung is hardly above 0%. For struggling companies like HTC aggresive pricing would mean they would have to subsidize every phone they produce.

Roxx, 08 Jan 2016well HTC one 7 is more than 3 years, so what do you expect?... moreActually, this phone is a mid 2013 phone, at least in my country. In some places you can still buy it, new that is. I tell you 2 phones from basically the same period that are good also today, better than this HTC M7: Sony Xperia Z1 and Google Nexus 5.
At least Sony and Nexus phone are getting updates.. HTC are awful at updating their phones.
I mean you buy a flagship phone (minimum 500 euros off contract) and after 2 years you don't get update with the current Android software (that is Android 6.0, 2015 released). Yeah, yuppy HTC, that is why everybody hates HTC..and that is why year after year they are going down. They treat their customers like sh**.

The price of the midrange A9 going up by $100 might have something to do with it. HTC has it backwards, phone prices go DOWN over time as the hardware ages. Silly HTC.

Some of the comments here are laughable. HTC being a Samsung and Apple wannabe??? Lolz A little research my friend and you will see that Apple took a leaf out of the HTC One M7 design, which in turn inspired Samsung.
HTC have been making fantastic handsets for a couple of years now (anyone who has used a HTC will tell you, people who have never used one will talk trash about it). The problem HTC have are 3 things; 1) The 90 day promise for the latest Android updates are not true. 2) Advertising. I cannot begin to tell you how rubbish their advertising campaigns are. Having Robert Downey Jr bouncing up and down to boom sound speakers isn't encouraging. HTC need to get back to the drawing board and think of campaigns to lure in more customers. And 3) Bringing out some pointless handsets, which are not needed after releasing a decent one. The A9 is a good handset but was pointless, as there are better HTC handsets out there for the same price. HTC need to focus on releasing handsets that will attract the consumer, not make them scratch their heads.
But as brand, HTC are one of the best. Ignore the trash talkers who are slating HTC phones, they have never used a HTC handset before. If you don't believe me, go into your local mobile phone dealer and play around with a demo handset and see what you think.

Because HTC phones have a very poor repairability. Imagine digging through the entire phone just to replace the battery. They could have copied the iPhone's top down construction to make repairing easier. But no, they just make their phones look like an iPhone but their repairability is still a nightmare.

HTC is one of the worst companies in the world. No update for devices slightly more than 2 years. Never buy HTC again.

Yes i know that this will happen to htc, for any company which is running on consumer satisfaction consumers are first but for htc protocol is first they just dont care how big is your problem they only will follow protocol but not customers
I had my issues with htc that ran for period of 8 months before i finally gave complaint in consumer forums that's the standard of htc.

I wonder why so many posts here from ppl who "hate" HTC ? If I dont like any other phone or manufacturer I don't even read news about it, and I certainly wouldn't bother to comment.
I guess the only explanation is that most HTC haters are Samsung fans: that makes sense since S4, S5 and even S6 look like a toys with their plastic bodies and crappy Touch wiz compared to real phones like M7, M8 and M9.

No wonder with those overpriced phones - there's no reason to choose them over a cheaper one from a different brand.

Just lower the price by 10% to 20% & people will think of looking at HTC. Good phones but expensive compared to the features which are mostly offered by any company these days & the competition is growing. Mistakes done by Sony, Nokia, Blackberry etc... HTC will have to aggressive in pricing or else will have 2016 the same way
