Apple strikes back - the police searches Gizmodo editor's house

27 April, 2010
We are sure all of you are already familiar with the tale of the lost and found iPhone 4G prototype. It seems Apple won't give up until "justice" is served to all, whose hands touched the device, despite the...

Anonymous, 27 Apr 2010The person who sold the phone to Gizmodo broke this law:- ... moreThe person who found the phone tried to return it to Apple! He was laughed at by Apple's people when he told them he found their prototype iPhone 4.

All subsequent events could have been avoided if APPLE HAD NOT BE SO G*DAMN ARROGANT!

I don't discount the laws you so skillfully cut-and-pasted. But do you think the situation would come to where it is if Apple hadn't be so freakin' stupid in the first place??

Gizmodo and its editor and owner are the criminals, since they bought stolen property. Apple is the victim.

This is the foolish act on behalf of apple. There are more polite and approachable ways to deal with this this editors. breaking in some one's house without his concern is not justice. Apple Inc will only scrap their good will by filling cases here n there. If the attitude remains same for their free promoters... they will end up with many enemies who will promote other barnds instead of there one. Now as damage has been done, they need to settle the matter as soon as possible in polite and approachable way.

Apple should not react so foolish by blame the person who is help them promoted their products. The best thing apple should go to the person and negotiate with Chen in politely instead send troop to breaking a person property without discussion with a person ahead of times. If you looking for a marketing termonology apple gain alot of free adv by Chen who is went out to demostrated about the products. This is advantage by get free advertisement. Secondly, apple should fire they employee for careless or irresponsible of using company asset without take coution of keep the items from public.
From now on I will boycott by tell all my friend do not buy apple products another thought apple is not that big deal for me any way, I prefer to buy x10 or HD2 instead.

I'm a fan of this site but this post seems inappropriate. It would appear that the author is deliberately choosing to ignore facts and is actively encouraging hateful comments/bashing/trolling.

                  A quote from the article:
"Grey Powell might be the guy that lost the prototype, but Apple screwed up big time by dismissing the anonymous person who tried to return it. The company is bearing the fruits of their own arrogance and they better give up on this case before they make complete fools out of themselves."

First of all, the supposed attempt to return the prototype is a claim made by Gizmodo itself. Even if it were true, it would still be irrelevant and clearly done in bad faith. The finder supposedly called the apple hotline. One has to wonder why the finder did not just turn over the phone to the police OR to the bar establishment. OR better yet since the finder knew the facebook page of the apple engineer he could have contacted him there. OR he could have even emailed steve jobs OR dropped off the phone at Apple headquarters. That the finder did not do any of these options but rather chose to sell the phone to the highest bidder leads to the conclusion that there was never any intention to return the phone.

An analogy would be if I lost my nokia phone and that person called nokia to return it. Does that make sense?

Apple is just a load of CR*P .. they might have good devices .. but their ethics and values as a company sucks bigtime ..

I'm probably proud to say I've never wasted a penny on Apple .. and they aren't proving my conviction wrong either ..

looks like Apple - apparently, one of 25 tech firms to sit on the steering committee of the Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team (React), the Californian computer crime taskforce that broke-down Mr Chen's front door n confiscated his belongings - is using the REACT team as its personal militia.. This Apple is rotten already!

Now hear this... who has over-REACT-ed ???

Apple is on the steering committee of REACT along with 24 other Silicon Valley companies including Microsoft Corp., Adobe Systems Inc., Symantec Corp., KLA-Tencor Inc., Applied Materials Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc. The committee acts as a liaison between the region’s tech industry and law enforcement.

“We’re still not saying it’s a crime,” said San Mateo County Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. “The investigation has contacted as many segments of the people involved in this situation, including the person who took the phone from the German restaurant. The police know who he is and they have talked to him.”

Wagstaffe said that an outside counsel for Apple, along with Apple engineer Powell, called the District Attorney’s office on Wednesday or Thursday of last week to report a theft had occurred and they wanted it investigated. The District Attorney’s office then referred them to the Rapid Enforcement and Allied Computer Team, or REACT, a multi-jurisdictional, high-tech crime task force that operates under the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office.

REACT then sought out the warrant that was served on the home of Gizmodo writer Jason Chen, seizing several computers, a server and external hard drives, as well as copies of Chen’s paystubs and his American Express bill. The warrant was served on April 23 while Chen and his wife were out of the house, leading investigators to break down his door and conduct the search.
