AnonD-63308, 19 Jan 2016I don't think it's because they don't want protruding camer... moreBut only the compact, and they wont develop another camera for the compact. They make one module that fits all sizes and that's it.
. the z5 is 7,3mm thick, the iPhone with camera is also only 7,8mm BUT, the iPhone sensor is smaller (1/3") compared to the larger (1/2,3") sensor in the z5. The larger the sensor, the larger the same quality lens is. The galaxy s6 with camera is almost 9mm in depht, the lg g4 measures 9,8!mm. Both equipped with an 1/2.6" sensor.
Why would lg and Samsung make this phones thicker than they need to be? No one really likes protruding cameras, this is only done when really necessary and Sony proves this with the z3 and z5

Great news actually. HTC have overall very solid quality builds.
The HTC One S, X One A9 recently to name a few have been brilliant. Very impressed with the recent A9. In real life its outstanding quality build. If not the best in store.
As an evolution and moving on, I look forward to what might be possible with the new nexus with a touch of HTC magic.
go for it.

5.0 or 5.2 is a pointless size un less they go for a >75% screen to body ratio.
Right now i have a 5.2 Honor 7 is an amazing device but i feel uncomfortable for the size and very hard one hand operation but i didn't have choice between top levels devices...
In 2015 5.1 or 5.2 were the smallest powerfull android and this is a shame.
I would kill for a 5 >75% body ratio but it simply doesn't exist

This post gave me cancer.
There's nothing wrong with an HTC Nexus. Have you forgotten who was the OEM who helped start the Nexus line in the first place? They've proved themselves from time to time that they can build a solid device. All they have to do is prove themselves again in 2016.

ethereal, 19 Jan 2016The problem is not with their lenses or sensors. Its the po... moreThe sensor in the z1 was the best anyone could get or lets say could not get, Sony didn't want to sell it and it was Sony exclusive. The sensor in the z3 was still top notch just because the z1s sensor was ahead of its time (almost the same model, z3 has the bug fixed and slightly tweaked imx 220 compared to the original imx 220 in the z1)
Now the z5 still has the best sensor, for sure it is.
The problem is the design of the xperia phones. They don't want to have a camera hump, so they could not fit enough lenses in between the sensor and the glas on the back panel. Additionally the lenses are very wide, causing the blurry effects on the borders. The post processing is not that bad, it has to clear a lot of faults caused by the bad optics so it looks like it would make the images unnecessary blurry. But when it does, most likely it was necessary.
Sony wants to do the, with 2015 tech, impossible. An outstanding camera in a slimm body without any protruding lenses.
Looking at the competition:
-IPhone, we all know that even Apple had to "ruin" their design to keep camera quality at a high level and apple takes their design really serious.
-galaxy s6. Of course it has and is was a smart move of Samsung to make the camera a design element
-lg g4 and v10. Almost non protruding but the device itself is a lot thicker then a galaxy s6 for example, so again the same space for the camera
-nexus 6p.. We all can clearly see what they did
Looking at top devices with a slim housing and no camera hump
-huawei p8. Slim and the camera is not bad, but just not top notch, like the xperia line year for year. Not bad but just not as good as its competition
-xiaomi mi note. Worse camera than the original mi4. Going back from 6 lenses and f/1.8 to 5 lenses f/2.0 while keeping the sensor could not do any good to the quality.

ZXcorr, 19 Jan 2016I definitely would buy the 5" one, as long as it's got the ... moreIt's so sad what happened to HTC. The HTC one s and HTC one X had the best cameras at their time. An f/2.0 aperture in a time where no one was interested in it and additionally the best LCD screen you could get anywhere. The one X had one huge major problem, the tegra chipset was just not good in any way. But still, it wasn't htcs fault because Qualcomm had no solution to battle the galaxy s3s exynos. The HTC one m7 was also a bit of a revolution, first manufacturer that implements big pixel sizes, their problem was, that at this times the sensor they would have needed and the optics just weren't available to have enough megapixels and a big pixel size. But still, HTC was the first company that introduced a wide aperture and the first to think about pixel size.
The one X and the one m7 had more revolutionary things than any Samsung. The antenna system that Apple copied, the first real aluminum unibody, the front dual speakers, a really high pixel density...
What happened then? I don't know but as we all know it wasn't any good.
Long story short: HTC haven't had any good camera solutions in the past few months or even years but it has not always been like that. If they manage to catch up to their quality of ideas they had 3 and 4 years ago, the camera could, especially with the help of Google, be the best in any phone.

regs, 19 Jan 2016after all those problems with cameras it's better to avoid ... moreWhat a moronic statement! Sony is renowned for its lenses and cameras, Samsung, Apple, Huawei N6P, LG et al use Sony sensors. Only criticism of Sony, in terms of its own phones is usually around software algorithms which it invariably addresses via software upgrades. That is for those who want to criticise, despite alleged algorithm issue, Sony cameras still take awesome pictures which are up there with the best if not the best but then I don't suppose you have ever held a Z5 or Z5 Premium, maybe not even the Z3, I am skipping Z3+ as it was pointless. Stop trolling and get a life.
