OnePlus X will no longer require invites to purchase

28 January, 2016
OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei announced on the company's official forum today that the OnePlus X will be available for purchase without invites from now on.

People stayed in line for invites on the OnePlus One because the hype was so high, people were really talking good things about the device and the price was so good, for a true flagship. With the 2, people were not happy with it, and on the X the target is different, aiming at smaller devices with a lower price tag. This last target wants their devices right away. People are willing to wait for a flagship - and not that long actually - but not for a cheap offer. Xiaomi's Redmi Note 2 and 3 were a big hit, and Mi4 dropped in price. OnePlus is in a bad place right now, and I bet they are starting to lose money each day, just because they are no selling that many of devices, while they have to maintain a big structure that was mounted for the One's demand.

Anonymous, 28 Jan 2016I see no problem, OPO1, OPO2, OPX (that's three, 3) and X b... moreThere's a typographical error on there, apologies, it appears you missed my sarcasm in the original post - I was purely pointing out that, in the article, they have named the OPX as the One Plux S.

I hope their PR gets hit by a Chinese tour bus, I never got the invite so I bought my friend's Z3 instead.

While the PR is rather awful, the X is still an excellent phone in its price range. After all, it's essentially the OnePlus One (an awesome phone) with some handy additions (like that card slot).

Anonymous, 29 Jan 2016Yeah, like someone would even get in line to buy an Android... moreWell if people are ready to get in a long queue to get the next iteration of their fruit phone that is almost exactly the same but with a new number, I guess they could do that for any phone..

I personally prefer Samsung mostly because of the camera but OnePlus actually make very good phones that are not as expensive as others of the same level.

it is marketing strategy I think. They wanted to make people think that their phones are very special that only few can have it. But since the beginning, they were eyeing on this free selling, not sure if people will buy it though - strategy and phones themselves

I'll personally consider and iPhone once it's sub 400€ and has an AMOLED panel. I feel that AMOLED is like high FPS or SSD. Once you have it, going back is just painful.

If OnePlus makes an X2, I'll definitely consider upgrading in a year or two. Retaining the same form factor and upgrading the hardware would make an easy purchase for me. I'd pay 100€ extra for OIS and NFC tho.

Yeah, like someone would even get in line to buy an Android phone. Especially considering it's coming from a Chinese unknown brand.

Maybe not the best for the price in terms of features and pure performance, but definitely a solid buy for a light to medium user. Glad to see it go invite-free.
There is no NFC and video recording in low light is poor, but if you can live without those, it's a very good device for the price point.
