All the latest HTC Android phones will get the Froyo treatment

21 May, 2010
The Android 2.2 Froyo was announced just yesterday, but many users are already wondering if they will get the upgrade. Well, HTC is the first to shed some light here and the news is good. According to their...

i wouldn't be really surprised if Eclair for hero would prepare the device for future upgrades.

this whole htc bashing seems senseless to me. people bash htc for delaying the release, while no specific date was ever confirmed. i've checked htc's twitter - only mention about this update was made in february, and it stated that they will offer this update, nothing more, no release date. next up is a press release about Desire and Legend, with probable suspect for this "april madness":

"The new HTC Legend will be available in Europe through Vodafone and in the direct channel beginning in April. It will roll out to other parts of the world including Asia in early Q2. HTC Desire will be broadly available to customers across major European and Asian markets in early Q2. The HTC Desire will be exclusively available in Australia through Telstra. The enhanced HTC Sense experience will also be offered as a free upgrade on the HTC Hero in Europe and Asia."

while it stated that Legend and Desire will be available since april, there isn't any date provided for hero update. people really need to learn to read. other than that, any unnoficial announcements made by supposed htc employees are just rumors and shouldn't be considered a trustworthy source of information...

I have a HTC Hero that is unlocked (2nd owner)
Will the android 2.2 update come out for this? and if so how will i get it onto the phone? Seems like everyones heros are still on 1.5..
My phone is starting to get laggy and annoying. I've deleted quite a few apps and games but it just seems to be going slow now. Will the 2.2 make it smoother?

android has great potential but this fragmentation could bring it down like it did windows mobile, OEMs need to offer better support for existing devices rather than pushing new one out and trying to sell them at the expense of customers with slightly older devices. google need to have some control over how upgrades are distributed and to which phones.

waiting for months on end for an ROM upgrade, and when it does arrive could be out of date anyway doesnt paint a good picture of the OEM or the software for that matter. although the desire has upto date spec, whats stopping htc from delaying the 2.2 upgrade, when by Q4 it will have come up with new phones running the latest OS be it froyo or gingerbread.

i read that sprint hero go the eclair update about one week ago, so what is delaying the update else where? it's only matter of difference between type of network coverage as sprint hero shares the same hardware and software,,,

-Create Google's flagship, the Nexus 1
-Raise the processor of phones up to 1Ghz
-Make their own flagship, the Desire
-Started to make deals and start selling in Australia
-Created the first 4G device, the EVO
-Deal with the release of the new Froyo
                      etcetc

and you tell me they don't need time when they put resources to do the above? If you were a company you'd concentrate on that instead of firmware updates for a year old phone. Don't you agree?
Truth to be said,if they don't release it for another 2 months, THEN it would be too long.

this whole point is non sense. HTC wouldn't listen anyway..
But one thing you said wrong is about hard working time to put eclair in Hero.. That much time, really?? Even the guys at xda dev who are doing this in their spare time (beside their main job mopping floors), is doing so many costum ROM till date. And you tell me HTC with all the resources in their table still need time? what a lame excuse once again.

We certainly not so dumb to realize that the real motive is money matters. After all this chinese company with their philosophy (don't judge as yet). And should I chinese am myself, be proud to say that we are the most materialistic people in the world, that all in our head is profit and loss? lol!

But that doesn't escaped them to be fingering by many Hero users, since we buy it as premium and topnotch phone. Oh well.. I'm done talking also. Senseless.

Hero is good for 2.2, 22 May 2010Be glad that they didn't cancel the update, because they cr... moreOk, just let me say I'm obviously not related to HTC at all, so when I say "they might cancel update for teh Hero if they get a larger userbase on new devices" is totally hypothetical. Just sayin'.

Sprint has released 2.1 already for SPRINT Hero's.
I am a Hero user, but I just don't get why people are bashing HTC for delaying eclair. See what I did there xD
From a company's POV, its newer devices MUST come first, because that represents the current state(or facade if you must) of the company. The newer devices get advertised more, etcetc.

The problem with the "confirmed DATES" is that HTC never officially announced an official DATE for hero's upgrades. Your confirmed MONTHS were only spread from rumors of returned enquiry emails from HTC. HTC never confirmed anything other than releasing the eclair to the Hero "soon".
Anyhow, I see no point in alternatively saying whether HTC said any sure periods which it will release eclair to Hero.

The main point I want to say is that things need Time and Money. Patience is a virtue. Think of the hardworking developers at HTC. They don't get paid for nothing. Or the do-nothing employees would have been sacked already. Its been "delayed" because its not finished, and there's not much you can do. Whether they announced a date or not, it will be released the ASAP, being HTC's best interest to do so. Why worry about the date?
I did repeat that point because I think you need to absorb that in. What do you mean by HTC's bad attitude to Hero users? What bad attitude? They are making the update, and will not delay for no reason. They delay because they want the Hero users to have a proper, working update, instead of releasing prematurely.
I am aware of fragmentation of Android- and I do think Desire/other devices will be left on 2.2 when gingerbread releases. But HTC will probably support these devices to upgrade to gingerbread by the time the next version is announced. Unless google prevents this by assuring all different UI's have finished developing before releasing its Vanilla version of that new firmware, while somehow not delaying by 1/2 a year plus.

That is an issue that should be fixed, and I also think I should type less. My point is already in the comment, and is the same as any comment I will be saying even if I comment afterwards on this topic lol.

I'm not gonna say much about, man. Your statement says it all..
If HTC have this kind of attitude, even the new fanbase will get dissapointed eventually.

and speaking of HTC never confirmed update, they did actually, saying it on April, then may, then june... Well you don't know the frustation since you're not hero owner obviously.

And fyi, hero is the biggest selling HTC android to date, even today people still buy new Hero. that's how pupolar it is, and that's how much HTC own its fame from Hero, their multiple 2009 awards winning that they kicked away now.
Yes, we have a lot of fan base, you can check in fb page. and you don't have any idea what this people will react in their future decision in upgrading their phone. Wouldn't that be great loss in long term for HTC that only mind short time profit? I don't know. Time will tell..

And as for me, I will stick with Hero for quite sometimes until google OS really mature. You know that they have introduce v2.3 Gingerbread.
                            http://www.shuttervoice.com/4064/android-gingerbread-features-version-2-3-announced.html

the fast growing android OS is beyond the capabilty of phone maker to handle realy.
And I'm not surprised if in near future HTC announce the v2.3 device and left Desire stucked with v2.2
That's why we need to be careful I think you see my point.

The people who should really be worrying are the legend users. They are not really new, not old, and not a popular device, shadowed by the desire.

I didn't say that the hero shouldn't get an update, but that it should be later, which you seem to accept as well. You wanted an exact date?
If HTC gave a solid date and delayed that, they would lose trust from customers.
If HTC gave a solid date they would give themselves the pressure of a deadline, but if there was no promised date, then the team can work to make the port so they can be sure it is ready when they do tell you a date.
The current ambiguity saves a lot more trouble for HTC.
For you, have been thinking too narrowly. Be glad they didn't cancel the update, as that may happen. If they create a large enough fanbase on the newer models, I doubt a bunch of complaining hero users would be much.
I agree HTC should be good to its customers but the thing is, making the hero eclair upgrade IS a good thing. They announced it, They ARE doing it, yet you are complaining about a mere date?
You said you don't expect the eclair right now, so I assume that you know HTC haven't finished the upgrade anyway. I assure you they will release the upgrade as soon as its done, its obviously in htc's best interest to do so. Why worry?

and we, HERO costumer aren't received a SINGLE update since it's birth till now.

HTC sese UI is the best no question about it. I will still buy from HTC if they treat Hero like the way they do. But make sure you have what you want in the phone and never ever put your hope in the update.

maybe it will come maybe it not. the road is long and frustating, and HTC doesn't do help to shed a light on it.

I think google nexus one will get v2.2 fastest, but it doesn't have sense UI.

Anonymous, 21 May 2010You do realise HTC as a company needs to create a userbase ... moreWell well.. you sound wise but your argument is lame.
When I purchased Hero I know it's flaw, some are irrepairable like no camera flash which I have to live with.
some are promised to be fix in the future firmware like BT file trf, google apps, etc. So I and a lot of Hero buyers thought that HTC will fix this, and also bear in mnd that they promoted this android as open source, not even like apple. so you would think that HTC would treat it's costumer better, wouldn't you?
but it turns out to be false.

It's not like we want the update straight away.. we know that HTC needs to push new model sales. But their silence and keep delayeing until the v2.2 is out and we still haven't had the EXACT TIME when the v2.1 update (which already outdated version btw) is!!!!

like the guy said before me, this Hero doesn't come cheap. I buy it for usd500, and some others 500euro.

don't you think the costumers deserve better treatment?
