All the latest HTC Android phones will get the Froyo treatment

21 May, 2010
The Android 2.2 Froyo was announced just yesterday, but many users are already wondering if they will get the upgrade. Well, HTC is the first to shed some light here and the news is good. According to their...

Why don't you ask if HTC will upgrade the HD2 to some newer Windows Mobile 6.5.x build? I feel like we're left in the dust.

One more important thing, SE is the only company that makes real updates not upgrades and I'll tell you the difference!!

When a company like htc or samsung make an upgrade let's say from andriod 1.6 to 2.1 they only upgrade the whole system and the people who did the job is google not htc or samsung. Get the Idea?

But what's special in SE is that they have updates which means they add more things like games + themes + more features and apps.

Also, they change the UI which gives you the feeling that you have a new mobile! And let's not forget the improvements of the sound and camera!

That's why I love SE, because they really make a difference. It's not like copy/paste the os and ship the new one. No!! It's about being different and unique.

Anonymous, 21 May 2010You do realise HTC as a company needs to create a userbase ... morei am really amazed how many people talk about htc hero as if it's some device from the stone age!! look at hero's page and u will see it was released in july 2009: less than one year ago!and looking at how a company like nokia is stiLl releasing new firmwares untill now to devices like 5800( about 2 years old) and how apple didn't forget their iphone and iphone-3g with updates when they released 3gs and in the 4g upcoming updates,, i see HTC giving the finger to old costumers to push them to buy new products, and i know many who sold their heros and went to iphone because they were really pissed with the way htc treats it's old costumers,, it's not our fault coz legend is about a replica of hero,, HTC SHOULD NEVER FORGET THAT HERO COSTED 440 EUROS WHICH CAN GET U A DECENT NOTEBOOK NOWADAYS!

an official announcement from htc or not, am not entirely convinced. if its coming in the 2nd half of the year i wouldnt expect it any sooner than end of december, and by then the N1 might be running gingerbread. i have a hero and still waiting for v2.1. i do prefer the sense over the stock android look, but fast losing patience and hope in htc.

may jump to WP7, cos no chance that all android will run the same versions at the same time.

What the phone manufactors could do, is to release an optinal upgrade, without their customisation, for older models, at least to begin with.

Nexus One proves that basic Android is at least OK, even if those front ends that the phone manufactors put on there makes it better.

X10 with plain android 2.1/2.2 will not produce as good images... but some users might prefer the other features that they get.
X10 mini, perhaps would not be a good candidate for such a upgrade, since the screen is too small... but that is about the only device, that wont do the basic things ok with plain android.

Normaly Id say that you should not expect upgrades of your phone. The problem with Android and iPhone OS, is that none of them are still complete.
They may have fancy looks, but there are a lot of things missing.

Its a little bit like if a producer of a phone puts a lot of hardware in there, and when the phone is released you still cant use the hardware and have to wait for firmware updates.

So in a way, iPhone OS and Android updates that come along are very much like firmware updates, they just bring funtionality that you should have gotten in the first place.

That is why I can understand complaints here, its not about having a phone and getting the latest, coolest OS for free, its like having a phone, that miss some functionality is should have had in the first place, and then not getting the firmware updates, that you expected.

The problem is that Google and Apple put new stuff in there as well... they should work parrallel with two updates, one for older devices, just to get the basic functionality, and one update that gives you new eyecandy and new features, that was not expected 1-3 years ago when the device was sold.

Hero cpu is good for, 21 May 2010Do you know that despite v2.2 being newer version, it requi... moreYou do realise HTC as a company needs to create a userbase for its newer phones? If HTC spends budget porting every new version for the older models for the next 5 years or so, then much incentive is lost on its newer models.
After all, HTC needs moneymoneymoney to develop and port these updates to Sense. It makes more sense to give these updates to the newer and more expensive phones to make people buy that, as opposed to porting it to Hero, where the device has already been bought.

If you were to make a company, with enough money to make a port of the Froyo, would you port to the newer models so people buy it to get profit, and THEN port it to older devices which people download and update for no profit to HTC?
Or would you use the money for the old devices and then consequently make these newer devices have outdated software until you port Froyo to them. Then these newer devices would have the same problem you were complaining about!
I think the delays of updates are fair enough, considering the innovation of recent devices by HTC. For example, creating flagship model for Google itself, raising processor bar up to 1Gz, etc. It is a better feat than creating an update for Hero.....don't you think?

Plus, when you bought the Hero, it was great for its time, it's done its job, there should be no complaint because that is what the Hero is. For an example: You wouldn't be complaing to Nokia/Ericsson/Blackberry/whatever, that your year old phone isn't getting the newest version of their OS's right? So why to HTC? Even the Apple fanboys didn't, they just bought a new 3G/3GS (lol waste).

with the same cpu froyo can run 4 times faster than eclair. So whether hero get an upgrade or not is solely depend on the good will of HTC.
This is the part that I'm sceptical about (but I hope I'm wrong). since they keep postponing something they promised 6 months ago, the eclair update.

so, by the next month that update should happen, it's already outdated. And many HTC fans are not happy with the way they treat their costumers.

I myself if going to upgrade my hero, I'll be back with HTC for sure but I will make sure that device got everything, because I can't believe such promises from HTC ever again.

They're very productive with new smartphones and have a strong tendency to leave the previos models behind.

I play by your advic, 21 May 2010by the time I bought Hero, it was the best hardware. There'... moreYEs, that is true. The Hero is only 1 year old, while the hardware is really weak compared to the Desire/Nexus One/X10.

I think this is because of a sudden INSANE jump in hardware. I myself see this. Not even a 1.5 year ago, I got a Sony Erricson C905. Besides being a very good camera phone, it does almost nothing. That was still the period (at least for me) before the 'smartphone' hype.

Than after 6 months, I got a Blackberry Bold. It was 'the best' at that time, with a 624 MHz processor, HVGA LCD screen, 2MP camera with Flash. That was a year ago.

Now? almost all these specs are twice as high! 1GHz processors, WVGA AMOLED 3.7 inch screens, 5 to 8 MP camera's with dual flash, 500+ RAM... etc etc. This huge jump was needed, to reach a new level of smartphone's. Now I believe there is going to be a bigger jump in software.

So, if you have a something like a Desire, Nexus One, EVO 4G or even a Samsung Galaxy S, the hardware should be good for a while. It will only depend on HTC to keep bringing the newest versions of Android.

Because really, do you think the hardware can keep improving at this rate? That would mean we would have a 2GHz processor in a year. And what good would that be? It is not needed on a smartphone and would only kill your battery like hell.

It just sucks for those people with Hero's/Legend's. Nice devices but they just lack some high end specs.

If you get a more expensive higher end model, it sort of pays off in the end because the hardware is generally better and more advanced and is able to handle upgrades to newer more sophisticated OS upgrades.
