Cant really understand the relevance of alternative route during traffic bcoz when i used google maps during a heavy traffic i took the alternative route that had less trafic but OMG when i get there it was cramped up by vehicles with GPS navigation installed or people with GPS equipment like smartphone

comparing the 2 map apps Ovi seems signifficantly better to me
+with Ovi you can have "whole wor in your hand" as you can download map of ANY country in the world (in fact best is to download the whole continent or even world nad you do not have to thonk again about the data)
+ if you do not have data plan you can do it via PC so easily

I didn't expect for them to list Canada in the middle of the list of European countries. Perhaps the writer should brush up on his geography.
Unfortunately for me, it's not available on Symbian yet.

I was waiting for this to happen, but the lack of offline map download is a serious deal breaker.
Here in Italy data plans are ridicoulosly expensive (not to mention roaming charges), to the point that buying a second phone with Ovi Maps on it would actually be cheaper than using Google Map Nav.

I'm in Metro Vancouver and I've been trying out both Ovi and Google Maps on my Nokia N97 in preparation for a trip to Ontario and Quebec later this year. Since the navigation for Google is not available in Canada yet, Ovi will win hands down on that point alone.
Still, there are some nice features that I really like about Google Maps. The one feature that I like the most is the traffic feature. If you're familar with the city and know alternate routes, this feature is handier than traffic updates on the radio or the web.
Google's search feature simply blows Ovi out of the water. The voice recognition is the coolest thing even though it is not 100% accurate. The voice reco is best for familiar names without any ambiguous spelling. It can find Subway restaurants no problem, but cannot find Navaho Dr. because Google maps wants to spell it Navajo. Maybe I'm pronouncing Navaho wrong. If you have to type it in, you don't have to be totally accurate and you will have a good chance of finding what you are looking for. Ovi on the other hand has a terrible search feature. It cannot even find Ridge Meadows Hospital spelt fully. I have to go to Google Maps to find the address and then type it into Ovi maps.
The lack of preloaded maps is Google Maps biggest liability. As others have mentioned, you need some data plan. If you travel, you may incur hefty bills. The other thing I have noticed is that in certain areas, the network coverage is rather weak. I at times out driven google maps because I hit an area where the network happens to be slow. This is within Metro Vancouver. I would drive faster than Google Maps can download the area I am driving through.
Neither mapping software is perfect. Both Google Maps and Ovi Maps have tried to direct me to drive into a road that is for busses only. Both have provided me with rather questionably inefficient routes at times. Still, for the most part, either app will most likely get me to my destination even if it takes me a little longer than the best route.
One thing that I have noticed about Ovi maps is that it seems to pick different routes at different times of the day. It appears that Ovi maps optimises based on traffic at different times of the day. I haven't noticed this on Google Maps, but Google at least tells me where traffic is heavy and I can reroute. Without navigation, rerouting while driving is going to be difficult.
Right now, I plan to use both to complement each other. Google for searching for the address and Ovi for the navigation.

ovi maps is just and app garmin makes full gps units

Downloadable maps should be the norm in Europe. Otherwise, you can navigate only in your own contry for free.
