Mr B, MR JIN and the other commenter is all correct with their perspective.
The word MINI is doesn't really give exact idea of how mini it is. Again the Idol 4 is bigger and they have a version smaller than the elder sibling. Does being smaller justify the word mini.
I read the comment about mini bus and mini van. But we all know that bus is big and van is bigger than a car so the word mini would still mean they are bigger than a car.
If alcatel has only produced 6 inches or 7 inches phone/phablet all the time then the word mini gets a justification here.
As a end user if I think of a mobile and the word mini I would think it to be something like Iphone4/5se so on. But when I see this having larger screen I would certainly be taken back.
Even though all 3 commenters have a vaild point. I still think word mini with a 5 inch screen would be not a good choice.
Also I want to point out GSMarena said mini variant. They did not specify( I think) its called Alcatel idol 4 mini. So its also another perspective that we all read the title in a wrong way.

Why? It will only make standard Idol 4 more expensive :/ (so they won't canibalize themselfs - Idol 4 is 5,2')
Is there any info about prices and availability for the Idol series?

B, 19 Mar 20165 inch phones are not mini variants. Yes it is "smaller" i... moreYou answer yourself. Do you expect a mini truck to be smaller than a car? Even mini bus is still bigger than most van.

B, 19 Mar 20165 inch phones are not mini variants. Yes it is "smaller" i... moreYou have just answered your own query, because this is a smaller version if the standard phone, thus termed the mini version. Just like the Hummer (which is not exactly a small vehicle by anyone's standards), but a smaller version can still be termed the 'Mini' Hummer, because it is still smaller than the standard version, even though it is larger than most vehicles of that type on the road. It's all about perspective, that, and the fact the market is a changing.

its only a matter of time Alcatel catches the market. the past 3 years, they have been designing some good looking phones with cheaper specs and great focusing on the speakers. Design indeed matters, it gives an identity to the brand. galaxy s to s5 had no identity with the same old boring look. samsung has stepped up the game with curved and slim designs but overwhelming prices that only so many can afford. Sony is getting boring as well, same old same old. the Xperia arc days are gone and prices are getting higher by the year. No brand is more disappointing than Sony in the high profile market. What are they thinking really?
It will be interesting when Nokia comes back into the market with an android, samsung and sony will have massive troubles. Nokia are known for multiple and luxurious designs with reasonable pricing. I hope removable batteries and back covers comes along which that itself a sales point of view. Technicians are ripping us off with all the non removable crap they are releasing today. Everything is a similarity to iphones who started this nonsense. all is there to it is some glue and ridiculous battery replacement prices. Kudos to LG though.

5 inch phones are not mini variants.
Yes it is "smaller" in comparison to a 5.5 inch phone but the term "mini" is so misleading.
