AnonD-500788, 05 Apr 20161. We both know that the ipad pro 9.7 is not as powerful as... more1. Powerful in what? Ipad pro is a lot more powerful in content consumption and in per watt performance. It's not powerful enough to compile stuff, but why the heck buy such a small device designed for mobility to compile stuff. Sure I'd welcome the capacity to do that, but to expect to do it fast would actually kill its portability.

2. Apple is lying. They better get their act together and start putting more mac os functionality to their ipads. We don't disagree there.

3. It's not an innovation to put the same desktop OS on an environment not designed for. Yes touch emulates the mouse, but the mouse is still a better alternative. Why instead of making Surface Pro a desktop centric tablet, didn't they make it into a Metro UI centric tablet? I'll tell you why, Microsoft absolutely missed the mobile revolution so all they are left to market is their desktop capabilities that now can be used by touch ... I mean wow what an innovation, introducing a new peripheral that actually sucks for productivity! (Really , the finger is really really bad for things like coding , or typing, etc ...)

4. Of course I want productivity, everybody wants that, but not at the cost of tablet features. I want a tablet to be a tablet, not a keyboardless laptop. Reread ipad pro's features and try to find how many of those are implemented well on Surface pro. Maybe one (pen support) at most, the rest of its tablet features sssssuck. And in the end if I really want productivity there is actually a device geared towards that, 13.3 inch laptops, ultraportable with bigger screens too.

Like I said, Microsoft missed the boat, their success with Surface Pro line is temporary because Apple and Google didn't rush to cover the niche of 2in1s in time... once they do, they'll do it better and ... bye bye half - arsed M$ ideas...

    2. The ipad pro 9.7 wen launched recently was said to being able to replace your 5 yr old pc but as you've pointed yourself, it not productive enough
    3. Microsoft is majorly a software company and they only used the surface to pioneer innovations, thus the recent surge in hybrid 2in1 tablets from lenovo, Samsung, hp, acer etc. Therefore the surface cannot die unless windows dies but i sincerely doubt that, of course we both know that.
    4. There's nothing wrong in making tablets productive as well cus i can't seem to remember any convention where it was agreed that tablets are not supposed to be productive and as such be used for only content consumption and somehow productive.
And i don't know how the surface failed in media consumption. Pls enlighten me.

AnonD-500788, 05 Apr 2016Btw pls show me the so called real tablet. PlsiPad Pro 9.7:

Easy to carry (less than 1 lbs), easy to read for a long time. Split-screen multi-window. Screen-wide navigation (gesture navigation), tablet optimized apps (twice the environments of phone apps, half the environment of laptop apps), proper dpi (~240, instead of 400+ that many/most phones have or ~150 that joke tablets like MS tablets have). Instant reaction time. 10+ hours display time ... need I go on?

Of course it has almost no productivity and that's where Microsoft wins currently. Once they put more productivity (along with Android N) Surface Pro would start feeling the noose tightening. By 2020 they'd be dead.

See the point is not to make the tablets productive, that's laptops' niche, but rather to place them somewhere in-between phones and laptops. Mostly for content consumption, but somewhat productive too. That's where Microsoft absolutely fails, they simply don't get it...

AnonD-500788, 05 Apr 2016If i should take you by ur word, that's to say in four year... moreI didn't say that 2in1s wouldn't exist. Just not in the form that Microsoft envisions (laptop first, tablets 2nd).

The point of a tablet is to be a good tablet first. If it's to be as bad as Surface Pro, what's the point of touch. I mean where touch really helps a Desktop OS? The only use case I can think off is drawing. OK, if you're an artist you need a 2in1s like Microsoft's.

Real 2in1s are tablets, i.e. not big phones (phablets) *or* laptops. Real tablets have OS-wide gestures, Tablet optimized apps (few elements, but more than phones, high dpi, but smaller than phones, far higher than laptops' though). Real Tablets have split screen multiwindow, pen support.

So real 2in1s of the future would be incredible tablets with some productivity on the side. Look Android N for example, it finally put multi-window in the mix too. Better mouse support. It would certainly NOT be laptops with touch. Touch is almost useless on laptops...

Surface Pro has a very slow growth curve. It's only better lately because it found an empty niche. When it starts being occupied by real 2in1s it would have great troubles. Both from real laptops and real 2in1s....

Once everybody who wants to have a Surface has it the sales would taper off and start their downward spiral. It's economics 101, it's you that you seem blind to it.

Things would be different *if* ipad users would upgrade their ipad into a Surface, then indeed Surface would eat into iPad sales. But that's not what happens. People buy surface to be productive, so they buy it to replace their laptop. That's not a hard concept to grasp, even for you.

Surface Sales would soon taper off, it's evident by how slowly they grow as opposed to how fast ipads grew (which saw an explosive growth).

Once everything is said and done the install base of tablets would far surpass the install base of wannabe-tablets-that-are-actually-laptops. And once the dust is down people would realize that traditional laptops are actually better and start going back to them.

                    See this for example: http://www.gsmarena.com/the_hp_specter_133_is_a_104mm_razorsharp_laptop_that_you_can_actually_get_with_a_diamond_finish-blog-17625.php

It absolutely kills surface pro at half the cost, same weight bigger screen, bigger battery, much more productive due to the the better keyboard ... Only a fool would buy a Surface Pro instead of that laptop.

Now if you want a tablet, only a fool buys it as a tablet (ipads are faaar better *tablets*). In short if you want to be productive, you buy a kicka$$ laptop, if not you buy a tablet.

Surface Pro is neither very productive, nor as portable and easy to use a real tablet. The market would realize this and abort this abomination by 2020...

Muthu, 05 Apr 2016I don't think Apple will close down like Nokia completely. ... moreThis is the curse of being too big...The problem is you can't take decision quickly like Apple did when it was not that BIG since it has to think about every geography, linguistics, operational, compliance, business, marketing, distribution, seasonal and other factors(investors)!! Very rarely we see a company of this size can be agile and yet delivering innovation...Tim more an operational person trying to optimize without taking huge risks (Apple Watch did not go too well as per his expectations though it may have out sold competitors). Company of this nature (Tech Savvy) must have a visionary leader keeping his/her focus too deep on products, technologies, integration and clever monatisation of services (App Store ecosystem). TC can take step back and let some crazy guy to lead from the front.

To me one of Apple's problems is that their products are TOO good. So good in fact, that I know people that have a 5s that aren't even thinking of changing their phone any time soon. It's just that good of quality. Almost 3 years in, and they all seem brand new. Snappy. zero reason to upgrade. Apple needs to drop that dreadful 'S' cycle and give us a new model EVERY single year. That's the only way to drive sales back up.

So i still don't understand how come you fail to see that the ipad is dying while the surface is growing.. Even apple knows this, why does it hurt you to know that the surface is growing as even predicted by idc in the said article you posted. Jkm, 05 Apr 2016Yes, iphones will phase out like nokia in the next 5 yearsI don't think Apple will close down like Nokia completely. The annual sales will go down and down and settle at some level. Trust me, nobody can predict the number at which it will settle down until that actually happens (may be by 2019 or 2020).

Apple has too many fanboys with superiority complex AND with big vallets. They will keep buying apple stuff, no matter what. Apple's marketing team is damn good in feeding to their egos and retaining them. So apple is not definitely going out of business in near future (say next 5 years).
