This modder got 64GB of internal storage on his Nexus 5 by replacing the eMMC chip

22 April, 2016
XDA member KApetz2 decided he loved every bit of his Nexus 5 so much, but hated that he didn’t have more than 32GB of internal storage. So he did what every modder does, he took matters into his own hands and bought a 64GB eMMC chip and changed the damn memory himself.

Why would you want to increase the storage of an old phone like nexus 5 this must be just to see if he could do it or not and not for daily usage shame he could fit a better battery its shocking on nexus 5

I knew it is possible.. Haha.. Back in the day i search high and low for a way to increase my lovely 7650's paltry 4MB internal memory.. I was thinking of swapping the chip with 6600's internal which is 10MB a theoretical increase of 150%.. Wow.. But back then I was just a small fry.. Those were the days.. Brings back memories.. Still missing my 7650 right now.. My 1st smartphone

It only shows how much we need Project Ara (or something alternative, since Ara development seems stagnant at the moment). Good job though. That's why we need open construction phones.

Wow! Very cool and kudos to that guy!
But for me it is too much of a hassle so I'll just choose what I think to be the perfect combo:
            - SD820
            - SD Card
            - Waterproof
            - FHD Display
The only phone to have those features: X Performance from Sony.

                Well dome modder :)
If every phone had expandable storage this wouldn't be necessary but as big corporations like screwing every last penny they can out of customers (You know who I am talking about) thank goodness for modders. Freedom will always win.

this is why Motorola engineer come with Motorola ARA, so we can custom chip, memory, RAM, etc. but after google took over the project, there is no further development. I hope google give back project ARA back to Motorola. after all Motorola is so much better in hardware innovation

"At first people didn’t know what the hell he was saying, and others were reassuring that there was no such thing as a 64GB Nexus 5. But there actually is now."

Congratulations to the modder. His hard work eventually paid off. Nice job!

Anonymous, 23 Apr 2016Does it work with Iphone???????????????????????????????Pretty much how Apple would do it (except not removing a chip but just placing the correct sized one from start), the software tools needed would be different tho and so is the chip needed. I have no idea how is the iPhone hardware programmed to accept the memory chips, but having that figured out, it's probably 1/10 of the price for a memory upgrade.
....obviously tho 100x the risk and work.

If one knows how to make the phone accept the new memory chip it will be the same work of de-soldering and re-soldering it.
