This modder got 64GB of internal storage on his Nexus 5 by replacing the eMMC chip

22 April, 2016
XDA member KApetz2 decided he loved every bit of his Nexus 5 so much, but hated that he didn’t have more than 32GB of internal storage. So he did what every modder does, he took matters into his own hands and bought a 64GB eMMC chip and changed the damn memory himself.

xntr, 23 Apr 2016How did he desolder the old chip? How did he solder the new one?BGA soldering techniques. Heat a bit the board to not let it all warp, heat the chip with IR light or a heat gun, remove old chip, remove solder balls, place new solder balls on new chip (if needed, usually this is the case), heat the chip in place again for the solder balls to melt. You do need some good equipment to do this, including the ball grid for the new solder balls, and this one is chip specific (probably it's a standard but there are many possible footprints).
Not something anyone with a soldering iron and patience could even bother a 1st try, it needs some pretty specific tools for the task (not specific to a Nexus 5 but for BGA work in general)

Anonymous, 23 Apr 2016Does it work with Iphone???????????????????????????????hey anonymous, i think it is possible for iphone as there was a blog about that here about china doing it on some 3rd party technician. they can salvage 64/128 gb storage from defective/faulty iphone and put it on a much lesser storage iphone (i think would only work with the same make and mode iphone 5-iphone5 iphone 6-iphone 6)

RaiRaiPasaway, 23 Apr 2016if you can do that, it would be really amazing.i think the back cam porgramming won't fit with the front cam, that would be hard nad for me it really is impossible for a regular geek like me to do it, specially without proper tools

not boasting off but i when i broke my high-end Lenovo phone, i took the camera on it and put it on my low-end Lenovo phone, had to do some programming before it worked properly, now my low-end Lenovo has high-end cam, next i will try putting a back cam to the front cam, it really sounds impossible to work tho

I know something like this would show up someday. This proves you can change the internal storage!
