have they forgotten about the smaller 2.5mm audio jack? they could just use that instead.
using one port for everything is a bad idea, if you charging your phone then you can't plug in your headset. and vice versa.

That point is 1) still very far away and 2) 3,5mm jacks have been around for decades as a compact, sturdy and reliable connection. Why ditch the good stuff? Oh wait, they need us to buy a new fone every week... So this week they'll ditch the audio-jack and next week they ditch USB-C for USB-D and who knows what it'll be next week. It's all about the money.

This is ridiculous. 3,5mm are the world standard for simple and effective music transfer. Not only to headphones but also to cars (aux-input), speakers, stereo's. Not to mention how are these morons going to charge the phone AND play music? With some fugly domino-adaptor sticking out? Do these idiots realize that USB type-C is STILL a rarity especially in cars and stereo-sets where they finally have 3,5mm aux-inputs as standard.
Or are they going to re-introduce FM-transmitters again perhaps? Not to mention that despite the advances in Bluetooth (Apt-X) there's still no car with an Apt-X BT connection factory-installed either.
I guess these handset-makers are running past themselves one day. And then they wonder why they don't reach their sales estimates.

headphones are easily removed from the USB-connector type C ... audio experience will be so distracting ... FYI ... thiner phone means thiner battery... FYMI ... digital audio through digital conector on digital headphones... what about the qualiti of performance (say goodby to portable Hi-Fi) ...

I'm just saying that making a phone super thin is just too excessive, because I like to know my phone's in my pocket. And as far as a room big computer goes, I think it would be pretty damn awesome to have a tower PC as a wall in my bedroom xD
But yeah, I do appreciate the existience of laptops, and they aren't excessively thin.

I'm happy for it to be replaced with something everyone is going to use; the USB Type C is going to end up everywhere at some point so it might as well be that.
Routing through the lightning connector is just the usual apple gouging. When will they be taken to task for the damage their old crap that they make obsolete on purpose for money, does to the planet?

Few years back every phone had that same thing. Head phone pin fused with charging port. Then came apple and android that made 3.5mm norm. And now we are going forward to past. -_-

Why not both?
Will be awesome if my phone support both types. It's not like all phones have constrained space like fruit phone.
3.5mm jack is more mature, has more tools & accessories, and more userbase.
It takes at least 1-2 years to migrate existing 3.5mm user & manufacturer to USB Type-C.
Having a phone that support both types in migration phase would be useful.

Removing the 3.5mm jack is a good example for planned obsolescence. (The other good example is the non-removable battery.)

Look back f... moreThe big difference is that these changes in PCs getting smaller and hard drives more dense and efficient, are IMPROVEMENTS, while this one brings absolutely nothing better, it just makes things more expensive and actually less power efficient: you'll be running out of battery sooner with this than with the current wired headphones.
It's a step back instead of an improvement. No matter how new it is, it's just like an electric umbrella I've seen here about a year or two ago. is it new? Yes. Is the old umbrella old?? Centuries. Which one is better? Heck no need to ask, ye oldie umbrella!
WHY? THE OTHER IS NEW!
Well here it goes: you'll never run out of battery and get soaked when it happens, you can buy it on any cheap store for some amount of money on the one digit only class, vs like 3 digits at least, no noise at all against noisy motor blowing the water away, lighter, protects against sunlight if you need, easy to repair or replace if needed.
Conclusion: some stuff don't change cause there's literally no need to change, most changes can only make it worse.
While USB 3.1 (Type C port) is an improvement, with some nice stuff and all, this idea of removing the 3.5mm jack, killing it in place of the USB one, is just like going the electric umbrella way.

This is nothing more than forcing a change for more money by selling "special" headphones, remember that conpanies can restrict which brand headphones will work.
