I'm not sure if you need to really consider 2 cards for DX12\Vulkan, after all they simplified all the graphical processes, so it will work smoother than DX11, and still look better. But yeah, 1080 is the way to go, since it'll cost similar to 980Ti (though I think once 10XX cards will come out, the older ones will drop the price significantly).

AnonD-507785, 10 May 2016In current VR state? A bit silly. I've tested VR on my sing... morethe 980ti has 6gb of vram not 4gb, sli/crossfire will be useful with dx12/Vulcan will also give performance boost to dx11 games too like normal games there are vr games that need more power and in the future sli/crossfire could make a difference, buy what you can, if you can afford 2 then get 2, I would recommend 1080s over 980 ti's tho

viveksubhash, 09 May 2016well said...(though i'll probably never go amd)
this updat... moreYes.
I have seen it across a range of industries and products, and acknowledge 'planned obsolescence' started with lightbulbs 100 years ago....
Some companies do it by accident, and eventually fix slow downs where possible (apple get hammered for this, yet whilst the initial update slows down said system, once made aware they rectify - as much as they can- and so some updates don't offer the full suite of features that other units get, to prevent needless slowdown or overhogging of limited memory etc).
Some companies intentionally do it so as to try and get more sales of the new product.
It is on this front I take task with Nvidia. Who have gone downhill fast in my eyes, offering very little customer satisfaction for last gens products.
I could argue the same of Samsung based on my Note Edge.
A big selling feature of this phone is the edge screen, which could be used for things like the camera.
An OS update, and that feature is gone (and camera focus times are horrible, if at all achievable- the camera I would say is nearly useless presently). And the wait times for Android 6 is stupid.
My market was fortunately one of the first to get the phone, and at a horrid premium cost over the Note 4... And I am in one of the last markets that seem to be getting the new OS. In a month or so hopefully.
I can understand Australia may have been a great 'test market' to sell into and see adoption rates, but forgetting about us and rolling out updates for this premium phone way after every other Samsung, becomes acceptable, if thought goes into the update.
Didn't happen with Android 5 (broken camera as an example),.. I won't hold my breath for the new update when it finally lands. They have no interest in looking after customers who paid top dollar, fine, I won't make that mistake again. (Sad Samsung, I have used your flagships since theGalaxy Nexus S and S2).
Companies intentional crippling of older products to push new sales is a short term win.
We consumers have to vote with our wallets.
Whilst I have been quiet on these forums for a few months, Nvidia adoptees should be warned of the company ethics.
Whilst I have owned nearly every nvidia generation since the riva tnt, and I want physx etc, they have killed off too much in the effort to force me to adopt this new tech.
Caveat emptor (let the buyer beware)

Works the same as CPUs - every new generation brings a bit higher core speeds, but the real upgrade is visible on power consumption. I'm just waiting for computer tech to go below 10nm FinFET, this will be the huge leap forward.

AnonD-5197, 09 May 2016What do you guys think of 980 ti and 1080 SLI for VR??? Is ... moreIn current VR state? A bit silly. I've tested VR on my single R9 390X 8GB and at this point I haven't seen any stutter in any game. 1080x1200, 90Hz, 50-60fps per eye. 980Ti will be a similar option, though its 4GB makes it a bit less future proof. It all depends on how much 1080 will cost in your region. With that being said, high end card can pull VR without a problem, no need for SLI\Xfire.

i still don't get it how nVidia managed to scoop a single 8-pin connector only for power considering the beast of a card the 1080 is.

AnonD-5197, 09 May 2016What do you guys think of 980 ti and 1080 SLI for VR??? Is ... moreDirect x 12 titles would allow that pairing.
Probably not ideal for present games, but then they already run extremely well.
I get the witcher 3 with full hairworks and ultra details (only at 1080) with high framerates on a fairly old video card (2012). VR needs high frame rate and, essentially dual screens... But due John Carmacks 'shadow buffer' chip being off die since geforce 3 days, shadows don't play well in VR presently (unless developers have a new technique for shadows).
TL;DR, for present games existing high end hardware is fine. For VR maybe add another of the same card for present titles.
For future direct x 12 titles two cards of differing architectures will work (though expect teething problems)

this update thing and throttling performance is the market strategy for most companies, you have just noticed it for the gpus, its almost the same for phones, how else can you explain phones getting slower after each update...each OTA claims to improve stability, improve camera, blah blah. even flagships suffer from this. in their defence they are giving support and adding new feature, but these phones were probably not designed to do those in the first place then why bother?

AnonD-392127, 08 May 2016U r kind of wrong mate. Go to youtube and search for 60fps ... moreyes there is a difference..i'm saying that it isn't necessary...films have been made at 24fps for decades now(i think decades)...if i remember hobbit was made at 60 fps, there is a trailer too.. check it out and tell me whether the motion looks too artificial or not?
