Android N seamless updates not coming to existing devices

20 May, 2016
Google announced a bunch of new features in the upcoming Android N during the Google I/O keynote, one of which was seamless updates. With this, new Android devices running N will be able to download the updates in the background and the next time you restart the device you will be running the new version.

Anonymous, 20 May 2016I wonder if this feature will work if you root your phones?... moreOnce the upgrade file is received via OTA, & the upgrade procedure starts, it detects that your phone has been modified or some binaries from the actual OS have been altered, thus the upgrade won't proceed & will be aborted.

Looks like all OEMs should make a base variants of 32GB instead of 16GB.

I wonder if this feature will work if you root your phones? Will it remove the root when it updates the phone? Is android taking the road to the close system like ios for this feature to work, no more root, no more custom firmware???

Yes, I don't want it. I want to decide whether and when an update is installed.

Yikes, that would remove root for rooted devices (only for new Nexus phones but still).

Yay thank you google... We already have Microsoft to eat up our precious bandwidth... We get that the seamless update is a good thing for not overloading your servers.. How about an option to receive an update notification and we can then book an update??

This is disappointing. So I got the LG G5 a month ago for nothing as the new Andriod N will only come in upcoming devices. Just a plan to make more money to purchase new phone in order to have the latest software.

It's a nice concept, but I don't like the idea of background updates that don't tell me when they're updating and making my already low bandwidth mysteriously disappear - I've had enough of that with Chrome and Windows, thank you very much.
