Google's modular Project Ara phone will be out for developers this fall

The best I can think of these ARA phones is that they'll not only be availiable to the general users, but more important, with hobbyist and electronical tinkerers, that can also develop new solutions bases in what they learn, and try, and fail, and retry on their phones.
Now you'll be able to tinker not only with the software, but also with the hardware, and make custom parts from scratch if you're smart enough to do it.

What do u want from Android phone? Better camera, Bigger RAM, Better SoC, Bigger Screen, or maybe better speakerphone? What will u do if u can get all the specs u want just in 1 phone?
This is [probably] the background idea of project ARA. Up till now, ALL u can do when buying the mobile phone is choosing the design, checking all the features u need, then pay it. If after several months u still like the phone, then it's ok, BUT what if the phone u bought didn't meet ur expectation? What if some of the features u need have troubles after several months of usage, but didn't want to bother bringing ur phone to service centre just to wait for several DAYS to MONTHS to get ur phone fixed? With ARA, people can get AS MANY FEATURES as they want in a phone, and can 'fix' any parts that have problem in the blink of an eye by 'replacing' it with the new ones.
Moreover, the thing about mobile phone manufacturing is a bit complicated; for REGULAR phones that sold widely, ALL the phones comes with its PLUS & MINUS, customer just have to 'deal with it' as long as possible'. Order-made phone option are POSSIBLE, but IMPRACTICAL, since custom-made phone COSTS EXPENSIVE since they only made a handful of it. Another option is LIMITED sale phone or limited edition phone, BUT this is just another variant of REGULAR phones, with more 'pricey' price tag. Because of this, Google [in my opinion] tries to build a ''semi' order-made phones, which is, making the parts in 'pieces', then assemble them, just like LEGO.
The negative aspect of ARA project is, the phone will be EXPENSIVE and the durability of the parts are questionable. The other one is, the 1st gen of ARA devices have LIMITED accessible parts, like NO SoC option, No Microphone option, No antenna option and many more.
The only possible solution for ALL to get a taste of project ARA is when they have partnership with reputable Chinese manufacturers (Asus, Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo) and then better refining ARA devices so more and more options are accesible to be self-upgradeable.

I like the concept, but I believe ARA is not the way it was meant to be. It is built around the idea of hot-swap-able components, but the initial idea only had "replaceable" components, hot-swap was added as a bonus. Or, more likely, dead weight.
I do not want components to be hot-swapable. I want a sleeker (thinner, smaller) device instead. I want to use screws, not magnets, to keep pieces in place. The problem with hot-swappable components: they require casing, which increases device size and weight (inner walls, back side wall, device's outside wall - they're superfluous, you can make the device smaller without it).
Why they went with hot-swapable components? I have no idea, but my guess is: its easier to design standard complete pieces than engineering standards for modular electronics. And I'm not a big fan of "easy way". The easiest way is the easy way out - not doing anything.

So you mean one of the most important components will not be swap-able? Even old non-modular phones had replaceable battery. Thought - you may still be able to add additional module with extra juice?! It seems to be like google glass - good idea, bet was never launched to open public and have never properly materialised..

ARA is the next step whether or not you like it, the same doubt were had about internal antennae's (THEY NEED AIR TO BREEEEEATHE), T9, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Headsets, and capacitative touch screens.
Point is everyone thought 'iPhone OS', before the official name, would be the only modern OS to replace physical keyboards. See I prefer physical keys over on-screen, but the world doesn't revolve around me..
The world also does not revolve around doubters, whether or not you like it the hardware we lay 999$ down is ours and we better damn well be able to fix our own batteries, cameras, displays, etc. I saw this tech from light years away being tested.
