Upcoming Moto Z will have MotoMod modular case accessories

26 May, 2016
Each case has a distinct function - there's one with an extra battery inside, another for better sound, and the last is camera-oriented.

Also, I would pre... moreThat phenomenon only occurred because HTC does not know how to manage heat in any phone properly, even the new HTC 10's CPU throttles and beats up way quicker than any other SD820 phone. I have 2 SD810 phones, Nexus 6p and Droid Turbo 2. They run flawlessly and get warm, but don't lag and the DT2 almost never throttles itself. SD810 is just as good a chip set as the Exynos 7420, but the SD810 CPU is a little slower, visa versa for Exynos 7420 GPU. Overall equally good chipsets, smaller node process or not. It all depends on how u manage a thing. It's just that HTC (and SONY, here lately, but mainly HTC) doesn't understand how to not have the hottest running phone in the segment of chipsets. Ex: I tried to open the camera app on an atnt display model HTC A9, and it was HOT. It lagged worse than almost any other phone in the store, other than the grandmaster of overheating smartphones, the HTC one M9. BTW I saw one of those off its charger, and used it for about 10 minutes browsing the web, and it crashed. The phone was scorching.

I like this concept more than I like Google ARA concept. A sleek, stylish phone with modular accessories bringing extra hardware. You keep a small phone but can "upgrade" certain parts at will. Unlike ARA, where you get a huge developer platform with inefficiently used space.

How refreshing to see a company provide useful modules for their device - unlike LG.
Unfortunately anyone with an ounce of common sense will realise these are just another gimmick to extract more money from the credulous & easily led.
Use a Bluetooth speaker or chromecast your sound if you must.
Invest in a phone that already has decent battery life management & a decent camera.
              Save your money! ;)

A flagship smartphone released midway through 2016 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC featuring two A57 cores is just unacceptable at a time when there are SoCs which feature either four A72 cores or even better four Kryo cores (Qualcomm Snapdragon 820).

My Nokia Lumia 1020 with its camera grip attached combines all three cases (MotoMods) since it has an extra battery inside the camera grip while at the same time the phone itself has stereo speakers and one of the best camera modules ever placed on a smartphone (41MP, f/2.2, 26mm, Carl Zeiss optics, OIS, auto/manual focus, xenon & LED flash, 1/1.5" sensor size, 1.12 μm pixel size, face detection & 1080p@30fps video recording with 4x lossless digital zoom).

But you already know once this comes out, people are going to start talking about how the specs aren't worth the cost, but I'm thinking Moto will be smarter about it this time around, especially with Lenovo at the helm.

R.E. Sony, you can't really disagree as it's a fact. Their successor uses the same chip, faux pas or not.

As for Moto Z Play (or whatever) I'd expect a 652 to power it, up from the 615 and still within budget for them if that's what they're aiming for. Would be a sensible choice for the so-called baby of the bunch.

The 808 is only a year old and has provided generally better feedback than the 810. So as a high end alternative the 808 is very plausible and acceptable. It always has been. You don't need the fastest chip to make the best phone. You need the most usable phone not the most powerful. I still think this will be more than powerful enough for anybody who ignores the benchmark scores and uses it in everyday situations. With the added benefit of having a choice in extra temporary parts as and when you want them.

                                  1. Moto X Style successor would have a pricetag around 30K INR to 35K INR.
                                  2. Other phones from Lenovo with SD 808 are hovering around 20K INR (Vibe X3, Moto X Style)
                                  3. Lenovo is not known for overpricing their phones, unlike Samsung (SD 410 for 25k INR in 2016)/HTC (SD 400 for 19K INR in 2016). I have not seen a single device from Lenovo which is overpriced in the last 1 year. I was not looking into their phones earlier, so not sure about that.

When it comes to providing VFM phones, Lenovo has always been bang on target with the pricing (including the launch price, even before any price cuts). So I don't see a case of Lenovo pricing a SD 808 powered device in 30K INR+ price range. However Moto X Play usually carries a pricetag of around 20K INR. With other SD 808 powered devices (Vibe X3, Moto X style) in the same price range, I am still inclined to believe SD 808 would be powering the lower version (X Play successor), not the higher end (X Style successor). Just my 2 cents.

The 808 was not even the highest end chip in 2015, no way can they ask for full price. If they price this thing at around $400 it won't be that bad of a deal but if this is their "flagship" device than it's going to have to pack a bit more than that. Trust me, I'm not big on specs but you can't make the best phone your company offers with these type of hardware specs.
