This software promises to bring Force Touch to any smartphone

Yes, you read it right, the perfect "clickbait" isn't it? Well, that's exactly what we thought as well, until we took a second look at the YouTube demo video, courtesy of the University of Michigan computer engineers (official channel and everything).

Srb, 27 May 2016all the rumours are pointing 2017 with no mechanical button... moreIPhone rumours are always of 2 types.
1)realistic
2)sci-fi /too good to be true /fan boys dream.
My friend have had a video of then upcoming iPhone 5 which was totally glass, u getting me, totally opaque. I.e type 2.
The iPhone 7su r talking about also falls in the second category.
The 1st type rumours of iPhone 7 indicate similar body to iPhone 6 and "redesigned" antennas.

Srb, 27 May 2016all the rumours are pointing 2017 with no mechanical button... moreRumours based on what?

Actual case makers have made cases based on the specifications that Apple obviously has to provide them so they can make them in time for release. And the cases show its the same.

The rumours you're talking about are wet dreams of Apple fans based on patents filed, basically they're mainly speculative.

And its unlikely the ... moreall the rumours are pointing 2017 with no mechanical buttons for iphone, bezel free from side to side, bottom to top. they need 3d touch because if iOS should ever freeze you have to had 3d touch to make hard reset power+home button...if home button was only software tactile button you never can reset your phone since you cant remove the battery

Srb, 27 May 2016wow, so much high IQ...force touch is like a black hole so ... moreApparently the iphone 7 is identical. And its unlikely the 7s will have a design overhaul.

Looking at various android phones with on screen keys, removing the off screen keys doesn't seem to have a massive impact on the size of the bezels, although given how big the iPhones bezels are it may lead to a reduction to a more reasonable size.

and 3d touch is hardware as well...so apple can remove the mechanical home button, while this is just software so they cant

My only question is how much battery will this consume? As having a speaker and microphone in constant use sghould drain the battery a whol lot!

RejZoR, 27 May 2016Wouldn't it be easier to detect the amount of screen finger... moreNope. thats practically not possible to do so as because the size of hands differ from person to person... just imagine if a kid is using the phone and suddenly after that a grown up man comes and starts using it with his giant hands (So more skin would be touching the screen), should the software detect it as force touch? similarly if you are touching the phone from exactly the tip of your finger and then you just slanted your finger a little, more of your skin would Start touching the screen but it doesn't mean you are putting enough pressure!

viveksubhash, 27 May 2016guys..how real is force touch?? i mean in real life? i hav... moreReal life usage is quite limited. It doesn't do anything that you couldn't do by just taking an extra click or two.

To give you a comparison, its like having a phone with an ir blaster in your hand while watching TV, and then using an app on your phone to use the remote when the actual remote is within arm's reach. It might be fun to do but a lot of people would rather just reach out for the remote. That's how much value force touch has at the moment. It might or might not change in the future though.

SGNote series can register a force of pen touch and its pretty useful, not sure about force touch.

Wouldn't it be easier to detect the amount of screen finger is touching? The more you press, the more finger gets flattened on the screen surface, creating larger contact point. I haven't checked how screens actually register contact, but one would assume size of contact surface does matter. It's probably how pressure sensitive functions work anyway.

viveksubhash, 27 May 2016guys..how real is force touch?? i mean in real life? i hav... moreother i dont know , for the iphone , when u draw, more pressure u press , more darker the line ... when u press harder on the icon , the shorcut for the apps will pop up , but u long press the icon without pressure , it will show x button to delete apps . and u press bit harder on the left side on the screen, it will open multitask like u double click home button ....

to me , other feature i dont used much , but i always used on opening multitask pressing left screen to void using the button ,
